

He grew up in West Salem and initially attended South Salem High School but transferred to McNary High School where he graduated in 1969. He enjoyed math and was an avid chess player and member of the chess club. After high school Bob attended Oregon State University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science. Bob went to work for the Oregon Department of Higher Education in Corvallis as a programmer. In 1977 he began working for Fred Meyer in the Information Services Department. In 1978 Bob met the love of his life, Dianne Phelps. In 1981 Bob moved to Denver, Colorado. Bob and Dianne remained close during his time away and became engaged before he returned to Portland in 1988. On April 21, 1990 the couple was married in Portland.
Bob took pride in his home in Portland and the log cabin in Brightwood. He loved puttering around the house. Bob and Dianne enjoyed life together. They enjoyed skiing, visiting his sister in Hawaii, taking a trip to the coast, and going to the casino. Family was important and “Uncle Boboo” loved spending time with his nieces and nephews. Bob also loved his animals, Lulu the black lab and Lami the cat. He was a longtime member of the Oregon State Alumni Association and supported the athletics department. Sports were another big part of Bob’s life. He loved going to Oregon State, Blazers and Mariners games.
Bob will be forever loved and missed by his wife, Dianne of Portland; sister, Marianne (Rick) Kelley of Kula, Hawaii; sister-in-law, Tanya Phelps of Troutdale; Nieces, Hannah Phelps of Troutdale, and Angie (Tom) Schultz of Kalamazoo, Michigan; and nephews, Alex Phelps of Troutdale, Matt (Jennifer) Kelley of Kula, Hawaii, and Patrick Kelly of San Francisco, California.
Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. at Skyline Memorial Gardens Funeral Home followed by a Memorial Service at 11 a.m. on Friday, August 8, 2014. Private interment will be in Skyline Memorial Gardens.
