Dr. Robert W. Player passed away peacefully on October 11, 2026, surrounded by the family that he loved so much. Having faced the profound loss of both of his parents by the age of six, Bob understood the tenuousness of life and the value of family love and support. His loss gave him a rare and empathetic perspective on the vulnerabilities of youth, as well as a lifelong determination to achieve and to constantly better himself. His drive was evident early on when he became the youngest recipient of the Eagle Scout award in South Carolina. After high school, he became a pilot in the U.S. Air Force. His educational pursuits never stopped, and he ultimately earned a PhD in Educational Law.
He was a dedicated educator, with a distinguished career as a teacher, high school principal, and assistant superintendent. In each of these settings, he loved interacting with students. He attended every type of school event and sought out students to personally acknowledge and encourage them. He asked of everyone that they give their best effort and, in return, he gave them his.
Just out of the Air Force, Bob met the love of his life, Susan Kay Larson. Together, Bob and Susan shared a beautiful life spanning nearly 7 decades. He is survived by Susan; his three daughters and their spouses: Kimberly and David Burroughs of Seattle, Kristine and Paul Smithers of San Diego, and Kirsten and John Smith of Portland, OR; and his six grandchildren, whom he adored. Grandpa Bob loved nothing more than spending time with his grandchildren. He was always happy to jump in the pool, throw around a football, or "do construction," always taking advantage of what he termed "a teachable moment." He and his youngest grandson, Liam, enjoyed outings around the Portland area right up until his passing.
A private family service will be held to honor Robert and the strong family legacy that he created.
