Robert Phillip Schneller was born in Portland, Oregon on May 18th, 1930 to William Phillip and Selena Alice Schneller. Following his school years, he joined the army and, stationed in Europe, proudly served his country during the Korean War. Robert served during an intensifying cold war and returned home with warm and lasting memories of those he served with.
At home, Robert set out to raise a family and followed in his father’s footsteps to become a journeyman electrician. He was a 55 year member of the IBEW, retiring in 1992. In his spare time, he enjoyed all things mechanical. Robert was an early and long-time member of the IKF. He enjoyed karting and in the 70s, was known for his competitive spirit and fast engines. After retirement, he turned his creative ingenuity towards woodworking, designing and building furniture for his children and grandchildren.
He enjoyed the outdoors and, in earlier years, hunting with family in the mountains of eastern Oregon and the Oregon Coast. He loved the water and, for him, the warm waters of Hawaii were perfect for snorkeling. Fun-loving, he did not let declining health keep him from a good roller coaster ride. In his later years, a family picnic in the Columbia River Gorge suited him just fine. He had a soft spot for animals and spoiled his Lhasa Apso ‘Woof’. Quiet and private by nature, he was accepting of others and did not complain. Even as his comfort and mobility left him, the sparkle in his eye did not, and he would light up when seeing his grandkids.
Robert died in Portland on February 20th, 2010. He is survived by Patricia C Schneller, his wife of 58 years; three children: Phillip J, Marilynn C Adams and her husband Mark, and Elizabeth R Klicker and her husband Max; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
His family wishes to express their thanks to the Kovak family and to Providence Hospice for the care and assistance he received in his final days.
A Memorial service will be held on Thursday, February 25, 2010 at 1:30pm in Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home, Portland. He will be laid to rest following the service at Lincoln Memorial Park, Portland.
Remembrances can be made to Oregon Humane Society.
