Roberta Shackleton

Roberta is preceded in death by her husband, Victor. She is survived in death by her daughter, Vickie (Shackleton) Deane and her husband James Deane; grandson Aaron Deane and his wife Taryn (Brendtro) Deane; granddaughter Tiffanie (Deane) Hockett and her husband Cole Hockett, great-grandsons Jordan Hockett and Cameron Hockett; and sister Mabel (Kirkland) Ramsthel.

Roberta was born at home in Armel, Colorado on July 28, 1930. She attended a one-room schoolhouse throughout her grade school years. The family moved to Portland, Oregon in 1944. She graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1949.

Roberta was introduced to her soul mate, Victor, by his cousin Jackie. They married on August 13, 1950, at the St. Johns Christian Church. They were married for 73 years before Victor’s death in December 2023. They truly had a fairytale marriage which was an inspiration to all who knew them.

Victor served in the US Air Force from 1951 to 1956 during the Korean War. Roberta went with him wherever he was stationed, from Texas to Spokane, Washington where she worked for Pacific NW Bell. Shortly after leaving the service Victor enrolled at Oregon State University for engineering and their daughter Vickie was born in 1958.

In the years that followed, Roberta was a full-time homemaker and very involved in her community and her church. She taught both children’s and adult Sunday school for decades, led women’s bible studies, and counseled so many over the years with her caring and confidential approach to support those who needed her.

She loved her immediate and extended family. She was always there in her daughter's, grandchildren’s, and great-grandchildren’s lives throughout the years and wanted to be up-to-date on everything her family was up to.

Roberta was an advocate for exercising her entire life. She only stopped playing tennis in her 80’s. She was very active, vibrant, and still finding joy in life two weeks before her death.

A Celebration of Life service will be held for Roberta on Saturday, March 8, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at The Well Community Church, 4340 N. Lombard Street, Portland, Oregon.
