Sam had a vibrant personality and a zest for life. While in school, he met his first wife, Vicki. Together they had a son named Robert. Sam met Barbara at church in North Little Rock, Arkansas and they married on May 25, 1985.
In his youth, Sam had a paper route. While in high school, he played electric and acoustic guitar in a band led by Don Crowder and managed by Huck Ledbetter. Also while in high school, he worked his way up to assistant manager at the Sonic drive-in. Sam then managed a bait shop and grocery and worked for several carpet cleaners and dry cleaners in the area before embarking on a long, successful career with the railroad. He began this career working for the Missouri Pacific. After the Missouri Pacific was acquired by the Union Pacific, he continued his career with the Union Pacific. In 1988, he transferred to Portland, Oregon and continued his dedicated service until his retirement in 2013.
Sam’s strong Christian faith led him to worship at Felida Bible Church, where he found solace and a sense of community. He cherished his time spent there and was an active member of the congregation.
Outside of work and worship, Sam had a variety of hobbies. He had a passion for reading, particularly astronomy, science fiction, and mysteries. Playing the guitar brought him joy, and he often enjoyed going out to eat, attending baseball games and watching movies with his friends. Sam was known for his love and for his extended family and for being a loyal and caring friend. Sam was a kind and helpful older brother to his six younger siblings. He walked all of his siblings to school until they were old enough to
know how to cross the street and watch out for cars.
