

Shirley Cummings, age 92, went to be with the Lord on February 2, 2026. She was born in Portland, Oregon on September 3, 1933, to Frank and Dorothy Hillier. Her younger brother, Alan Hillier, was born in 1938. She grew up in North Portland and attended Portsmouth Grade School, Roosevelt High School and Multnomah School of the Bible. She married Allen Cummings in 1954 and they were married for 55 years until his death in 2010. They were blessed with four children: Kevin, Kimberlyn, Kendon and Kerry. Shirley worked as a secretary at Roosevelt High School from 1974 until her retirement in 1990.
Shirley was a loving and generous woman whose life was defined by her strong Christian faith and by her deep love for and devotion to family. She accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior in her youth and served Christ faithfully throughout her life. She was an active member of University Park Baptist Church for 70 years having been baptized and married there. During her tenure at the church, she served in the nursery and worked with Allen in ministering to youth groups, international students and adults. She also supported Allen while he served as an assistant pastor at University Park for the last 17 years of his life. Her faith shaped not only her own life, but also the lives of those around her leaving a legacy of love and spiritual strength that will transcend generations.
Her family was very important to her, and she treasured family gatherings and outings. The family enjoyed many camping trips and Lost Lake was a favorite destination. In the summer of 1976, the family took a six-week driving trip around the United States. Shirley enjoyed traveling including a couple of trips to Israel, as well as Alaska and Hawaii. She also liked traveling to family weddings and graduations in various locations.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Allen, her son, Kendon, her brother, Alan, and her niece, Teresa Hillier Graham. Grateful to have shared life with her are three surviving children: Kevin (Vicki), Kimberlyn Chambers (Mark) and Kerry (Melissa), her six grandchildren: Jonathan, Andrew (Natalie) and Peter (Jennifer) Chambers, Daniel (Julie), David (Alyssa Vance) and Kerissa Cummings and her eight great grandchildren: Elian, Elise, Amara, Julian and Jalen Chambers and Kenway, Whitley and Eden Cummings, her daughter in law, Karen Cummings Crawford, and her niece, Tami Hillier.
