Stan left us too soon at the age of 73 after enduring ALS. He was surrounded by family in his hometown of Portland, Oregon. He is survived by his wife Mimi Heil (St. Martin) and their children Wesley Johnson (Mickie Anderson), Aaron Heil (Elena Polson) and Monique Blattner (Nick Blattner), grandkids Joseph, Jacoby, Jayden, Charlie and Henry, and his brothers Gene and Leonard. He is predeceased by siblings Jerry, Dennis and Naomi.
He was born to Philip and Helen (Woods) Heil on May 15th, 1949. In his formative years, he played football for Madison High School and later for the Oregon State University Beavers, where he bridged his athletic inclinations with cerebral ones—earning a Bachelor’s Degree in political science, followed by a Master’s Degree in political theory and economics from the University of Toronto.
His wanderlust led him to the Peace Corps, landing him in South Korea in the 70’s where he served as an English instructor teaching his students verb conjugation, grammar, and how to dissect John Prine lyrics.
After his time in Southeast Asia, Stan joined his brother, Gene, at the business their father had begun in 1955, Heil Electric. The following years brought with it many professional partnerships, personal relationships, and involvement with the National Electrical Contractors Association, leading to a stint as the local NECA chapter President, a number of memorable years on the legislative committee, and later becoming the recipient of the Robert P. Burns Life Award.
1991 led to a chance meeting with Mimi (St. Martin), and on December 6, 1992, they blended their families. This year they celebrated 30 years of marriage together.
Stan had a unique ability to bring people together, whether through friends he had had since childhood (and in an instance, since birth), through his sailing crew—a racing team built on deep rooted, ride-or-die friendships, raising spinnakers, lobbying with long-standing political partners, or conversing over a good bottle of wine. He is missed.
