Sui Jean Mar’s Eulogy - February 6, 1929 to March 9, 2015
Sui Jean’s life has been blessed with God’s presence and providence. Sui Jean Mar (Shau-Chun Wong) was born on February 6, 1929 in Canton, China in a village named Wong Chung Heung, Sun Wai to her parents, Chin Wong and Nui Yuan Yeung. Her father traveled afar to look for a better life for the family when she was still a toddler. At the age of 9, her father had passed away and her mother left her in order to marry a man in another village. Sui Jean was orphaned and lived with her grandmother for a short while. Her aunt, her mother’s sister, Ms. Yeung took her in to live with her family until she was of age to be married. As a teenager, she was given to marry her first husband who later died during the war. Soon after, she managed to find her way to Hong Kong, leaving China on April 8, 1949 in search of a better life. While in Hong Kong, she met Kong Koke Mar, fell in love and got married on December 28, 1953. Together, they had three children, Judy (Wai Chun), Helen (Lai Chun), and Jack (Lap Tak). Then, on March 10, 1968, Kong Koke and Sui Jean along with their children immigrated to the United States. They landed in Seattle, WA and were warmly united with her husband’s family and relatives. On May 26th of 1979, she was widowed again at the age of 50 when Kong Koke died of pancreatic cancer. After being widowed for 16 years, she married her third husband, Shiu Ping Chu in October 1995. Together, they enjoyed many fun activities such as hiking and fishing. Shiu Ping was a devoted husband who cared for her tenderly when her health started to decline in 2002. Shiu Ping died of lung cancer on December 26, 2003. Once again, Sui Jean was widowed.
While Sui Jean never had the opportunity to be formally educated, she managed with her innate God given abilities. Her accomplishments revealed her strong will and tenacity in learning in spite of the lack of a formal setting. While orphaned at a young age, she learned early on some of the most valuable lessons in life - love and be loved, respect for one another, always work hard at whatever you do, be resourceful, stay optimistic, be cheerful, and never give up. It was with that tenacious and optimistic nature that she endured hardships and challenges without complaint.
In order to help provide for her family while living in a new country and not being able to communicate in English, Sui Jean worked hard and tirelessly for many years as a seamstress beginning in 1968. She finally retired from working as a seamstress to take care of her first granddaughter in 1984. Her grandchildren Melanie, Derrick, Geoffrey, Dustin, Jaden, and Joelle feel immensely blessed by her love and the lessons they learned from her.
Sui Jean was blessed with a second birth when she accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Lord and Savior. She was baptized on December 15, 1974. Entering into a relationship with God filled the void left after being orphaned. God’s love and power transformed her. She was devoted to learning about God and growing in her relationship with God. She engaged in many ministries in the church where she is most remembered for her gift of cooking and hospitality. She always welcomed people into her home with warm, delicious, home-cooked meals. Many would ask her to share her recipe with them. She would not only give them the recipe but would even invite them over for dinner to show them how she cooks the meal. She was earnest in prayer for others and participated in weekly prayer meetings. Rev. Enoch Lau, the pastor who baptized her, recognizes her love for the Lord, her leadership ability, and her willingness to serve. Her faith in Jesus is an example for many. The combination of her innate optimistic nature and her trust in God enabled her to demonstrate strength, submissiveness, and joy in times of need and of plenty (just like the Apostle Paul).
Her family knows her as a loving mother and grandmother who always went above and beyond for them. She always put her family before herself. Her life is celebrated by many because she had so much love to share with everyone. Everyone knows of her deep faith in God. And she will forever be remembered as a very strong and special lady; always friendly, outgoing, cheerful, and caring - a wonderful and sweet person with a heart-warming laugh.
