Sung Ja Chang

Sung Ja (Rose) Chang, beloved sister, mother, grandmother and friend, peacefully passed away Tuesday, May 6, 2025. She was 85 years old.

Sung Ja was born July 12, 1939 in Incheon, South Korea to father, Yoon Ki Seong and mother, Noh Geum Jeon. She was the oldest of 7 children, 3 sons and 4 daughters. Sung Ja graduated from Kyung Gi Girls High School in 1958 and Ehwah Women’s University in 1962. She immigrated to the US in 1964 and married her husband, Chang Yoon Ho, in San Francisco, California that same year. The two welcomed daughter Katherine in 1965.

Following the passing of her husband in 1981, Sung Ja dedicated herself to her family and the upbringing of her beloved granddaughters. She was always their biggest supporter and could always be found in the school pickup line, on the sidelines of soccer fields and front row at their recitals and concerts. She cherished lifelong friendships with her high school classmates, they took many trips together and always enjoyed good food and good company. Sung Ja also loved to garden, her green thumb filled her home with many plants and flowers.

In 2017, she moved to Portland, Oregon to spend her remaining time with her younger siblings.

She is survived by her 6 siblings, daughter Katherine, son-in-law Forrest, granddaughters Allyson, Maddy, Jennifer and Alli and grandsons-in-law, Reky and Greg.

사랑하는 자매이자 어머니, 할머니, 그리고 친구였던 장성자(Rose) 님께서 2025년 5월 6일 화요일, 평안히 영면하셨습니다. 향년 86세였습니다.

장성자 님은 1939년 7월 12일, 대한민국 인천에서 아버지 윤기성 님과 어머니 노금전 님 사이에서 태어나셨습니다. 7남매(3남 4녀) 중 장녀였으며, 1958년 경기여자고등학교를 졸업하고 1962년 이화여자대학교를 졸업하셨습니다. 1964년 미국으로 이민하신 후, 같은 해 캘리포니아주 샌프란시스코에서 남편 장윤호 님과 결혼하셨습니다. 두 분은 1965년 딸 Katherine을 낳고 가정을 이루셨습니다.

1981년 남편의 별세 이후, 성자 님은 가족과 특히 사랑하는 손녀들의 양육에 헌신하셨습니다. 항상 손녀들의 가장 큰 지지자였으며, 학교 하교 시간, 축구 경기장 옆, 각종 발표회와 연주회의 앞줄에서 언제나 함께하셨습니다. 고등학교 시절 친구들과의 평생 우정을 소중히 여기며, 함께 많은 여행을 다니고 좋은 음식과 따뜻한 교제를 즐기셨습니다. 또한 정원 가꾸기를 사랑하셔서 그녀의 집은 그녀의 정성으로 가득한 식물과 꽃들로 아름답게 꾸며져 있었습니다.

2017년에는 남은 시간을 동생들과 함께 보내기 위해 오리건주 포틀랜드로 이사하셨습니다.

유가족으로는 6분의 형제자매, 딸 Katherine, 사위 Forrest, 손녀 Allyson, Maddy, Jennifer, Alli, 그리고 손주사위 Reky, Greg가 있습니다.

조의금이나 선물 대신, 성자 님께서 평생 신앙생활을 하시며 헌신하셨던 Korean Logos 침례교회에 기부해 주시길 부탁드립니다.

성자 님은 가족과 친구들의 가슴 속에 깊은 그리움으로 남을 것이며, 그녀의 조건 없는 사랑은 그들의 삶 속에서 영원히 살아 숨 쉴 것입니다.
