OBITUARY

Susan Mary Harrington

September 8, 1949September 2, 2019

Susan died peacefully surrounded by many family members on Monday, September 2, 2019. Cause of death were complications due to cancer. Susan was preceded in death by her parents, Bernie and Madeline, and her youngest brother Tom. She is survived by her six siblings John (Valerie), Pat (Kelley), Mark (Catherine), Kate Rice (Jim), Brian (Deirdre) and Nora, along with 23 nieces and nephews and 13 great nieces and nephews.

Susan attended All Saints Grade School, Holy Child Academy, Fort Wright College and the University of Portland, where she graduated in 1977. Her teaching career included 10 years in various grades at St. Charles Catholic School, a year in Round Mountain, Nevada, and 31 years at All Saints Grade School teaching Kindergarten,1st and 3rd grades. She was a devoted and beloved teacher who deeply believed in her faith based educational environment and inspiring young children. Susan was known especially for introducing the values of kindness and mutual respect into the classroom, creating generations of Peace Angels. She was a wonderful and highly respected colleague of her fellow teachers.

Susan was a soft spoken, kind hearted woman who always acted with gentleness and grace. Her students and their education preoccupied her life. She was extremely disciplined in her daily routine, regularly arriving at school by 6:30am to prepare daily lesson plans. Her classroom was filled with instructional visual cues and delightful artwork created by her students. Susan also enjoyed immensely organizing the children's liturgy at School Masses.

A special love of Susan's, especially during the summer months, was to spend time with family at the Oregon coast. She loved the sunshine, reading a good book, walking on the beach, or in conversation with her siblings and many nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews. We will miss her shining spirit, her laughter, her beautiful smile and Irish twinkling eyes!

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, September 10, 2019 at 10am at All Saints Catholic Church. A private, immediate family interment will follow at Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery.

Gifts in Susan's memory may be made to All Saints School to the Susan Harrington Peace Angel Scholarship Fund.

Celebration and Chronology

A young freckled girl with lots of blonde curls wearing a ruffled swimsuit, laughing as natural as her surroundings. The beach where the family had a cottage is one of my first memories of Susan. I always loved that freckled skin and blonde hair. But even more, her wit and courage to be exactly who she was. Often, we’re not able to envision our own effect on someone else’s life. Susan was a natural teacher and artist. I remember her as ever sprightly. The Irish Elfin perhaps? Years ago, I shared a book with her about two little girls who had a fondness for elves and faeries. They’d supposedly taken photos of them with an old Brownie camera. I was very young and asked Susan if she thought it might be true. She did not ask me….What did I think? She said….”Dreams are whatever you want them to be. Some will come true.” Thinking back, Susan wasn’t that much older than I was, yet the wisdom stirring in those bright eyes had started budding. I’m sure she understood the impact she had on those little souls she taught each day. But I pray she did, as well, realize the minute she’d smile upon entering a room, it brightened another person’s day. And when we’d get a hand drawn card with little ducklings! I could almost see Susan splashing in the Portland mist leading those baby ducks all in a row.
We form families for many reasons. But one that comes to mind is that there’s someone to keep a chronology of each person’s life. A statement or register of our years with family and friends. So when there is a gathering we can remember. Speak fondly and deliberately of.....

I remember Susan in grade school at All Saints, so very sweet and always laughing with a big, beautiful smile. She was a doll! When I saw her later in life, she still had that beautiful smile, so warm and gentle, just like her Mom. She will be dearly missed! My heartfelt sympathy and love to all of the family,

I met Susan, 17 years ago at All Saints. That is when Ms Rose hired me, & put me in Susan’s class as her instructional aide. There the story begins. Being an early riser myself, we found time to chit chat before school opened & cherubs arrived. We told each other many stories of our past, to where we both got the giggles.
Susan had a wonderful & infectious laugh. That alone, could put you in a great mood, along with her ability to mimic Donald Duck.
She was a wonderful mentor to me, & will forever be my forever friend.
My heartfelt thanks to her two wonderful parents, who raised such a faith filled human being.
My thoughts & prayers go out to ALL of her family, friends, & students past & present.
