Susan Wong was born on September 16, 1932, in Yin Dong village, Hoi Yin province, China, to Wen Gwang Chen and Chun Feng Low.
She married Harrison Wong in China when she was 18 years old. Shortly after their marriage, Harrison left for America, vowing to return once he had established himself in the new country. He kept his promise, returning to China in 1959 to reunite with Susan and take her back to America with him. They joined Harrison’s siblings in Portland, Oregon, where they settled into their new life and started a family.
While Harrison worked, she stayed home to raise their three children, learn English, and earn her US citizenship. In 1973, Harrison and his brother, along with both families, opened the successful Asia Kitchen restaurant, which remained a local favorite until they retired in 1997.
Susan radiated kindness, caring, strength, love, and respect, and instilled those values in her children. She loved to cook for her family, and had a passion for gardening and growing flowers, especially roses, dahlias, and peonies. She was a respected member of the Chinese community in Portland, and a devoted Christian throughout her life as a member of the Chinese Presbyterian Church.
Susan is survived by her three children: Elena Mano (Jim), Sharon Wong (Glenn Monzon), and Benton Wong (Jennifer); and four grandchildren: Jalen, Audrey, Dylan, and Phoebe.
Private funeral arrangements will be held at Lincoln Memorial Park Funeral Home, and a Celebration of Life will be held this summer
