Tang was born on April 18, 1918 in Canton, China, however his birth year was changed to 1922 to avoid the draft during the war in China. During this time, he had also escaped to Vietnam, where he met his late wife, Anh Phi Truong, and his second late wife, Lan My Truong. He immigrated to the United States in the 1980s and has lived in Los Angeles, California, Beaverton, Oregon, and Portland, Oregon.
Tang will always be remembered for his vibrant and stubborn personality. He had a love for calligraphy and practiced on scraps of paper all the time. Whenever Tang's grandchildren would visit, he would always have them pick lotto number for him for extra luck. He was also a very crafty and resourceful person and always found a way to repurpose the simplest things.
Tang is survived by his eldest daughter-in-law, Hoa Cao, daughter and son-in-law, Helen and Van Ha, his son and daughter-in-law, Phong Tran and Mandy Ha, son and daughter-in-law, Steven and Celia Chan, daughter and son-in-law, Diana and Michael Chan, son and daughter-in-law, Hanh Thai and Ling Huang, his daughter, Nhu Tran, and three sons who are still in Vietnam, Son Tran, Thanh Tran, Tai Tran, and their families, as well as 37 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.
