Terry Karl Tellert

Terry Karl Tellert, age 81, passed away on September 15, 2026, surrounded by the love of the family he cherished above all else. Terry was, in every sense of the phrase, the light in every room he entered — larger than life, generous of spirit, and deeply loved by all who knew him.

Terry was born and spent the majority of his life in Northeast Portland, the only son of Jack and Lucille (Gillette) Tellert. His father, Jack, had escaped Germany during World War II, leaving behind his cherished family to build a new life in America. He went on to serve in the U.S. Navy before becoming a sea captain. Because his father's work often kept him away from home, young Terry was raised largely by his devoted mother and grandmother, who lived with the family and helped shape the warmth and resilience that would define him throughout his life.

Terry proudly served in the U.S. Coast Guard, where — true to his lifelong love of the game — he found time to play baseball. He went on to attend Portland State University, earning a degree in history with dreams of becoming a teacher. Though life took him down a different path, leading instead to a long career with Qwest Communications, Terry carried a teacher's heart with him always: curious, generous with his knowledge, and endlessly willing to share what he knew and loved with others.

In 1968, Terry married Mary Dethloff, beginning a partnership that would anchor the rest of his life. Together they raised three children, Sara (Jim), Anne (Reggie), and Jacob, filling their home with love and laughter.

It was Mary's mother who used to say there was always room for one more in the Catholic Church. In 1990, Terry was baptized at All Saints Church, a meaningful milestone in his life and a testament to the family that had welcomed him so fully.

Above all, Terry's greatest joy came from his five grandchildren: Joe, Caroline, Marissa, Catherine, and Emma. They were, without question, his pride and joy, and he lit up whenever he was with them.

At home, Terry's constant companions were his two beloved Bichons, Max and Ruby, who had won his heart completely. The two dogs were rarely far from his side, and he doted on them with the same warmth and devotion he gave everyone he loved. Max and Ruby brought a steady joy to his everyday life, and their presence was one of the simple pleasures Terry treasured most.

Terry will be remembered for his warmth and humor. His absence leaves a space that cannot be filled, but the light he brought into the lives of his family and friends will continue to shine through them.

Terry is survived by his wife, Mary; his children, Sara (Jim), Anne (Reggie), and Jacob; his five grandchildren, Joe, Caroline, Marissa, Catherine, and Emma; and his two loyal dogs, Max and Ruby.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated on October 3 at 11:00 a.m. at All Saints Catholic Parish in Northeast Portland, with a reception to immediately follow in the parish hall.
