Thelma Lincoln McMurdo, age 91, passed away on August 12, 2010 in Beaverton, Oregon. Her family was at her side during her brief illness.
Thelma was born March 8, 1919 in Silverton, Oregon. Her parents, James Creed and Opal “Meme” Lincoln, subsequently moved the family to Vernonia where Thelma spent her childhood. Thelma graduated from Vernonia High School as Valedictorian.
In 1937 Thelma married Raymond H. Murray with whom she had a son, James Ray Murray. Following their divorce she married Charles H. Maginnis. Chuck and Thelma were married for nearly forty years, and had two sons, David C. Maginnis and Michael T. Maginnis. After Chuck’s death in 1987, Thelma married Charles Ted McMurdo in 1996. She was 77 years old at the time.
Thelma had a long career in human resources as the Benefits Administrator for Far West Federal Savings and Loan. During her working life she made many lifelong friends. She was especially close to the group that call themselves the “oldie moldies”. In later life, she volunteered for a hospice organization, giving back for their great help with Chuck.
Thelma had many interests, including knitting and entertaining. Her boys and their spouses and all of the grandchildren have personalized knitted Christmas stockings, courtesy of Thelma. She was also widely known for her skills at putting on the perfect dinner party. Always elegant, Thelma set a beautiful table.
After her retirement Thelma travelled extensively with Chuck, and later with Ted. She especially enjoyed cruises and went on over twenty of them.
Thelma is survived by her husband Charles Ted McMurdo of Beaverton, her sons James R. (Shirley) Murray of Oceanside, Oregon, David C. (Barbara) Maginnis of Redland, Oregon, and Michael T. (J. Tela Skinner) Maginnis of Manzanita, Oregon; her step-daughter, Loulie Gray and husband Roger Gray, and their children Michael Gray and Alysha Gray. Also surviving Thelma are her grandchildren Jennifer Hooley, Christopher Murray, Daniel Murray, Mary Ann Gates, William Maginnis, Jaya Skinner-Maginnis, and Taurin Skinner-Maginnis. Her three great-grandchildren are Samuel Hooley, Olivia Hooley, and Lily Gates.
Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Monday, August 16 followed by a funeral at 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 17 at Caldwell’s Funeral Home in Portland. A reception will follow.
The family suggests that in lieu of flowers donations may be made to Doernbecher Childrens Hospital, PO Box 4100, Portland, 97208-9908.
