Administrative Specialist Todd Allen Bick, 49 died in his Mulino, Oregon home on August 10, 2016 after a long battle fighting a seizure disorder contracted in Iraq while serving with the Army in the Fox 82nd Cav.
Specialist Bick was born on June 28, 1967, in Culver City, California to Henry and Kay Bick. In 1990 he joined the armed forces and was assigned to the Army base camp at Fort Gordon, Georgia and completed his Radio Operator and Administrative Specialist certifications. He was then deployed to Seoul, Korea at Camp Casey to work with all branches of the military. During his tour of duty he married Chung Yun Song. The marriage produced one child, Laurie Elizabeth born on February 14, 1992, after they returned to the US in 1991. The marriage dissolved in 1995.
Specialist Bick served in several military outposts which included Saudi Arabia, Okinawa (2 tours) and in Iraq from 2004 to 2006. During his tour in Iraq he served as the COMSEC custodian for F Troop 82nd Cav. and maintained the COMSEC equipment and encryption keys for weekly distribution.
Specialist Bick earned several awards and commendations during his 20 year career as both regular army and National Guard. These include: Army Lapel Button (2 awards), Army Achievement Medal (5 times), Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal with 1 Bronze Service star, Army service Ribbon/Overseas Service Ribbon (2 awards), Combat Award in Iraq and Expert Marksmanship Badge with rifle Bar.
Specialist Bick served the Army with great pride and loyalty and gave his 20 years service with joyful and difficult memories but always with the knowledge that he had chosen the career path that was made for him.
After returning from Iraq 4 days before the end of his deployment having suffered a severe seizure his life was never to be the same again. Concurrent with his seizure battle he also completed his Associate Degree in Web Design and Development Specialist in 2012 at Clackamas Community College. He also continued as a civilian working at Camp Wythecombe in Clackamas, Oregon at OSMS repairing and maintenance of Night Vision Devices. In 2015 he became the Web Master for the Clackamas Veterans Support Group. During that time he also rebuilt their computer program and was continuing to work with the organization up to the time of his death. He spent from 2006 to his death trying to overcome the seizures and return to a life where he could work a normal job, drive a car, and just live independently. That was not to be. He had the latest brain surgery in June of this year by an incredible neurosurgeon at OHSU that showed great promise but time did not allow the programming to be completed. His neurologist, Dr. Spencer, was fantastic and followed him from the time of returning from Iraq to the end of his life. The care he received from both VA hospital and OHSU could not have been better.
He is survived by his mother, Kay Kagy, his father, Henry Bick, his daughter, Laurie, his sister, Kathryn, his brother, Donald, 2 uncles-John Mahaffy and Jon Bick, 2 aunts-Jolyn Mahaffy and Bernita Roton, 3 nieces- Lahna and Daisy Madden and Karley Kagy and 1 nephew-Byron Madden.
