Velma Marie Lowery Mays-Davis

to Georgie L. Mays and Lonnie Powell. She departed this life on Friday,

March 5th, 2010 at her home after suffering nearly two decades living with cancer.

Velma accepted Christ into her life at an early age under the guidance of Pastor E. Lowe in La Grande, Oregon. Velma was the eighth child in the family of twelve children. She was the proud mother of two children and two grandchildren. She was a wonderful mother, an excellent grandmother, a loving sister, and a terrific aunt.

Velma attended Jefferson High School and Phagan’s Beauty College. She was

notorious for being able to take one wig and change it into several different

hairstyles. She was a great cook, an avid reader and enjoyed doing crossword

puzzles. Velma had a love for plants and could make anything grow; all she needed was a cup of dirt and teaspoon of water.

When Velma entered a room, her presence commanded attention. Her sense of style, love of high heeled shoes and ability to change her look “in a drop of a hat” is what made her not only beautiful on the inside but on the outside as well.

Velma was well known for letting others in need stay in her home. Being a part of such a large family she didn’t enjoy being alone, so her door was always open. Now granted; she often put people out, but because of the love in her heart she always let them come back. Velma’s home, her floor, extra blankets & pillows will be deeply missed by several individuals (you all know who you are).

Velma leaves to cherish her memories;

Grandchildren: Sha’Nae L. Mejia and Marlon V. Mejia, Jr.

Siblings: Willola Jones, George Mays, Lucille Bridgewater, Nathaniel Mays, Ivery Mays, Sr. (Carolyn), John Mays, Sr. (Rhonda), Stanley Mays (Doll), Alice

Montgomery (Ron), Albert Savage, Jr. (Jamie), and Nazarene Savage.

Along with, a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Velma is proceeded in death by her mother Georgie L. Mays; her father Lonnie Powell; and brother Hosie Mays.
