Verna Mae Longsoldier
Born in Riverton Wyoming in January 3, 1969
A member of the Northern Arapaho Tribe
She passed in Portland Oregon on January 5, 2025
It is with both sadness and respect that we reflect on the life of Verna, whose journey was as untamed as the open roads they traveled. A wanderer at heart, Verna lived a life marked by movement, solitude, and resilience, carving their own path away from the conventions that tether most to one place.
For over two decades, Verna remained estranged from family, a distance that left questions unanswered and words unspoken. Yet even in separation, their existence touched the lives of those they encountered along the way A kind stranger to some, a fleeting presence to others, and a reminder that life's journey can take unexpected turns, Verna was a soul who lived on the margins but deserved to be seen.
Though Verna faced many challenges, including periods of misfortune and hardship, they bore their struggles with quiet endurance. Their life, while unconventional, carried a certain dignity that can only be found in those who dare to walk a path less traveled.
In Verna’s younger years she attended school at St. Stephens school in Wyoming. As she got older, she had many adventures and traveled around. She mostly lived in Portland Oregon, where she called home. The past couple years she started attending church with her partner, Felipe.
Verna leaves behind memories fragmented and scattered like the miles they wandered of a person who may not have been fully known but whose spirit will not be forgotten. Let us honor Verna by extending compassion to those whose lives, like theirs, might go unnoticed but are no less valuable.
She is survived by Daughters, Zina Pettit (Chris Pettit), Chastity Longsoldier Sister, Darla Sanchez Brother, Ardie Longsoldier Her partner Felipe. She also has many aunts and uncles, Nieces and Nephews. She is also a grandmother and great grandmother.
She was preceded in death by her Parents Martina Brown and Aloysius Longsoldier also Her Brother Richard Longsoldier and Son Joshua Chavez.
May they find the peace in passing that eluded them in life, and may their journey now lead them to a place of rest and belonging.
Rest in peace, Verna Mae.
