Grandpa, it has been 8 months now, and we are ready to lay down grandma now. She was just not happy to not have you in this world anymore. She cried many times wishing you were here for her. Now we must lay her to rest. I miss you both so much. Looking forward to seeing you both again. I hope Grandma can walk in heaven. Maybe we can take Cola for a walk. By the way, here is your new grandson you did not know was being born! His name is Nolan Christopher. I will keep you updated in my prayers. I love you forever! Tell Grandma I am sorry I could not give her a proper goodbye. Tell her I love and miss her everyday of my life. See you Soon.

Grandpa, try not to worry about Grandma too much. She is in good hands. Remember, you taught us all well. We will always do all we can to help, you know that. We are still a very strong family. I know we will be there for each other, now and always. I am so blessed to have such a loving family I can confide in when I feel weak. We are still all suffering, trying to make sense of it all. But the fact remains, it just seems so unfair and tragic. We were not ready to have our special dear friend, father, and to some, grandpa, leave us so early in life.  Just take comfort in knowing we will see you again someday. Tell great-grandma hi for me, and that I have never stopped thinking about her. I will never forget all the nice things she did for Chris and I. My love for her still remains as strong as ever. I hope she is well. So easy to tell you take after her. Celebrated your birthday in my heart Grandpa, somehow I think St. Patty's day will never be the same for me again. It just does not seem right to celebrate it without you here. A very sad day indeed. I will try and think of all the precious memories we have shared when that day comes around each year, although this year, it just did not seem to work out that way. I still cannot believe how many people adored you. It is like everyone who came in contact with you,  took a little bit of the love you gave them, and kept it deep in their hearts. We will always love and cherish you Grandpa, you left such a huge impact on our lives, just being you. I miss you, now and forever. I just pray that maybe in time, the pain may ease up some. It makes it harder though, the more you love that person. Bye for now Grandpa.

Great-Grandpa, you were the great-grandpa all the kids dreamed about. Your always were there to make us laugh or teach us a lesson when we needed one. There were so many funny things you did. For example, I remember you were in the truck with Spencer and you were behind a semi, and you kept saying well keep moving!! But, you soon realized, it was parked. Those were the things I looked forward to when I came to portland to see you. You and Great-Grandma always brightened up my day,Your whole family and all your friends will miss you dearly. There was absoloutely NOTHING nobody wouldn't have adored about you. The closest thing I have to you is Great-Grandma, i wish she lived closer, theres those days that get so hard that I need to see your face again, everytime you saw Spencer or I you got this smile spread acrossed your whole entire face that would make my heart melt. That was a smile I could die for. You deserved the long and happy life you lived. You served our country which Spencer always loves hearing about, I remember when we went to my papa and grandma's house and papa brought out your guns and your sword, I swear the look on Spencer's face made me want to cry my eyes out. I knew right at that moment, you were all he could think about. Your all a lot of us can ever think about, wondering how your doing in heaven, and just wanting to see your face one last time. When we went to your funeral and I saw the castket come in, I couldn't handle myself. I was crushed inside and out. I wish I could give you one last kiss, it brings tears to my eyes just to think of the last words you said to me when I walked out, "I love you." I will never forget that moment, it made my heart smile, and I hope it makes you smile while reading this

You will always be missed, i wont forget the time we got stuck behind a semi truck and we were wondering what they were doing in there and we found out no one was in there. and not a day goes by and i do not think about you and every time i read a card from you it always brings tears to my eyes. i will always miss you and i will see you soon, i love you.

Grandpa, it has been 10 days now since you passed, and 4 days since your funeral. It seems nothing can take care of this emptiness I feel inside. I have thought of you non-stop, and think I may never stop thinking about you. I just miss you so much, my heart aches. Casie said the same thing to me at your funeral. It makes it so hard because we love you so much. You were such a joy to be around, and you had your funny little moments where you would make me laugh so hard. I miss you singing "I'm looking over a four leaf clover". Strange, I never knew all the words until the day after you passed, when I looked it up on the internet. Somehow I knew if I heard the man sing it who made that song popular, it would make me feel a little closer to you again, if only for a minute. I miss you so much Grandpa. I wish I could come and visit you like I use to, just to drop in and see what you were up to. I would usually find you in your shop, doing another small job for Cliff. Oh, how I wish we could just go back to what seemed normal, me just visiting spare of the moment to see how you were. I miss your laugh, your smile. I miss you saying, "Well if it isn't little Angie!" I will miss that and so much more for the rest of my life. I hope you are well Grandpa. Please say hi to Great-grandma Carrie. I miss her a lot too. Hope she is making you some goodies like she use to do for all of us. Please tell Kellogg, Lydia, Pumpkin, Odie, Pokey, and of course Cola I said hi too. I am glad you are with them all now Grandpa. Now they have someone loving and caring to watch over them. I am sure you are walking Cola right now. Love you Grandpa.

So sad my dear friend Vernon, has passed. I know he is in the best place..But it doesn't make missing him and less. My heart and prayers go out to his Bride and his loving granddaughter. God Bless you all in this time of sorrow. Love you. Joy Thorson.

My dear friend Vernon will be greatly missed. He was loved by so many. I will always remember his smiling face when we seen each other. Him and dear Ralph Stephenson ( another special man of God). did the most beautiful work on the yard around Mill Park Church.   Vernon you were my Grandpa that I never had.  Miss you dear friend. We will meet again.

Vern was my neighbor for 39 years, but most of all, he was a good friend that I could always count on. He was the most friendly & caring man anyone could ever meet. He knew how to fix anything ~ my lawnmower, my car, my garage door, you name it. I looked forward to my visits with Vern & Marion every week. I will miss him so very much. The neighborhood just won't be the same without you Vern.   Love you and miss you  ~  Coralie Montgomery

Vern wrote for us both but I felt the need to say words of my own also.  Vern and Marion were a big part of our lives for many years.  We lived across the street the whole time we lived in Portland.  Vern was always so good to our family.  They both were. We had four young kids when we moved to Franklin Street and they were more than tolerant.  They always had a beautiful yard and had to put up with our kids at times running after balls and tearing through their yard.  Our kids all grew up to care about both of them and came to say hello whenever they visited Portland.  Greg continued to be their neighbor.  One of my best memories of Vern was when he had his dog.  He walked that dog daily to the top of Powell Butte and totally loved him.  We cared so much for Vern.  He will be missed by us but always remembered so fondly for the kind and caring man he was.

Grandpa will be missed. My best friend, and most loved Grandpa ever. I will follow your examples throughout all my life, your wisdom has taught me so much.

I miss my Grandpa more than anything. He was the kind of person to always help people out, always giving them the benefit of the doubt. His words of kindness were found in everything he did, and everywhere he went. He was always there for me, no matter what. I promised him before he passed, that I would always be kind to others, and follow the footsteps of the Lord. I know he is at peace now, and the pain of the cancer is gone. All I want to do now, is make him proud, and hope he keeps watching over me. I am sure he knows how much I love him, and miss him each and everyday. I will continue to talk with him, and pray with him like we did at church. I will still sing his favorite songs to him, and know that someday, we can sing them together again. I miss you forever Grandpa. Thanks for making my life so wonderful with your caring ways, and for making me the person I am today. I really want to thank you for giving John a new Grandpa to love all over again. He misses you more than life itself. He feels he WAS your grandson, only you could pull that one off Grandpa. we lived acoss the street from vern and marion for twenty five years until we retired and moved in 1997. vern was more than a good neighbor. for 25 years he put brakes on my cars he loaned me tools and would usually come over and show me how to use them.how many times have i said "Ill go ask Vern".We never caught up to Vern. We still owe him. God bless Vern Satrom. Our son Greg will represent us at the service. We send our sympathy to marian and the rest of the family   Vern and Jeanie Melvin

I moved to Frankilin St. when I was 8 years old.  I later bought the house from my parents, and I still live there - I am now 47.  Vern has lived across the street from me and been part of my life for 39 years.  He is one of the most kind, caring and giving people I have ever come in contact with.  Vern would put new breaks on our vehicles, come to our sporting events, watch our house when we were gone, loan me tools and often times come across the street to help with the projects I borrowed them for.  I now have three kids - they all love Vern and are saddened by his passing.  Vern took time to show the Melvin family that he cared. We cared for him a great deal!  When I look across the street the picture I will always see is Vern and Marion happily working away on their beautiful lawn.  Vern was part of my life I will never forget.  He will be deeply missed by the entire Melvin family.
