Virginia Grace Northrup Hurst

Virginia was born August 11, 1910 in Shady Brook to Fred and Grace Harris Northrup on the family farm, homesteaded in 1868 by her Grandfather George Harris. She attended Shady Brook School and along with her sister, Una, rode the train from North Plains to Portland to stay with Aunt Pheroba to attend Jefferson High School.

She met Cecil Riley Hurst at a grange dance. They were married in 1933, worked on a farm in Mountaindale, and moved to Portland to work in the ship yards during WWII. She was a loyal and loving daughter and cared for her parents during their last years.

Although Auntie and Uncle had no children, they doted on nieces and nephews and were the “Oregon Grandparents” to grandniece, Laura and her brother Bill.

They loved traveling in the N.W/ with car trips in a succession of Buicks, going to the coast and to pick huckleberries in the mountains. They loved their yard, Rhodys and flowers. Uncle was an avid fisherman. They moved to King City in 1986. Uncle passed in 1990.

Auntie was preceded in death by her parents, sister Una, brothers, Alvin and Marion and nephew, Alvin Jr.

She is survived by nephews Fred (Nancy) and Roy, nieces Joyce Stride (Richard), Alice Miller, Grace Jarvis and Pat Northrup; 12 grandnieces and grandnephews, great-grand’s totally 28 and one great-great grand.

July 16th there will be a 1 pm graveside service with viewing beginning at 10:30 am at Skyline Memorial Gardens. A gathering to honor her memory will be on her 103rd birthday Sunday August 11th, 1 pm at the pioneer Shady Brook Church, Jackson School Road, North Plains. It will be a potluck.
