Vivian Angeline Fleener nee Cohrs was born at home on June 11, 1935, in Chinook, MT. and went to our Lord on Jan.2, 2023. She was Baptized on June 30, 1935, at Zion Lutheran Church in Chinook where her Father was a Pastor. In 1947 the family moved to Chilliwack, BC Canada where she graduated from high school in 1953. The following year they moved to Portland, Oregon where Vivian took a job at Hyster Corp. in their advertising department and would meet her future husband, Lyle (Reed) Fleener. Reed and Vivian were married at Zion Lutheran Church in Portland on August 8th,1959.
Vivian is survived by four children, Nancy Evans (Ron), Brian Fleener (Kathy) Janet Stevenson
(Jack), Darrin Fleener. Seven grandchildren, and six great grandchildren. Adam Pilarski (Carrie), Alexandria Fleener, Marilyn Fleener, Jed Jefferies, Jennifer Jefferies, Isabella Fleener, Henry Fleener. She is preceded in death by her husband Reed, Brothers Elmer, Victor, Orville, Howard and Ray Cohrs and Sisters Pearl Sommer and Marilyn Goldhammer.
Vivian created a home that always had open doors. The green house on Mason Street was a place that people gathered, played, prayed, celebrated, and knew that they were welcome. She opened her home to family and friends traveling through Portland providing the ultimate in hospitality. Vivian was actively involved in the lives of her children, she led Bluebirds and campfire for her daughters and participated in the local PTA, ultimately serving as PTA president of Alameda Grade school.
Vivian was an active member at Zion for over 60 years, involved with Lutheran Layman’s League, Walther League, Servons, Sunday School Teacher, and wedding coordinator. In 1974 Vivian went to work part-time for Portland Public Schools and a few years later took a full-time position with the school district and retired in 2000. She stayed very active after retirement as a well-sought after substitute school secretary. She also spent endless hours helping members of the Zion congregation, family, and friends. She was an active volunteer at Albertina Kerr for years putting her skill and knowledge to use in their thrift shop. (Where she often came home with a new treasure!) Albertina Kerr supports and empowers the most vulnerable among us with the simple goal of helping them survive, thrive, and lead more fulfilling lives. Her work there exemplifies her desire to be a good and faithful servant.
Vivian and Reed had many adventures including, rock hunting, camping, waterskiing, snow skiing, traveling to Minnesota, across Canada, and traveling by train to New Orleans. Vivian LOVED to go to garage sales, she collected Frogs and Shot glasses and was always looking for a great bargain.
Most of all she was a strong Christian woman who loved her Lord more than anything and sang His praises daily.
During the last 10 years, Vivian lived with memory loss brought on by Alzheimer’s. Throughout this time, she continued to reach out to those in need and always wanted to help wherever she could. Several caregivers and other family members with loved ones at the Royalton Place commented on how Vivian had a positive impact on those around her.
In lieu of flowers, all reembraces are requested to be directed to Zion Lutheran Church
