September 7, 1955 – April 12, 2025
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Walter “Walt” Brunswig, a beloved son, brother, husband, father, and grandfather, who left us too soon on April 12, 2025, in Portland, Oregon.
Walt was born in Eugene, Oregon, to Richard Norman Brunswig and Margaret Jean Brunswig (Funge). He spent his early years in Oregon and Northern California, eventually graduating from Pleasant Valley High School in Chico, California. He went on to earn his Bachelor of Science in Business from California State University, Chico.
It was during his college years that Walt met the love of his life, Jane A. Rosenbaum. They were married on June 14, 1980, in Ventura, California, and shared a beautiful, devoted partnership for over 44 years.
Walt began his career with the U.S. Forest Service, serving as a Hotshot firefighter—a role that reflected his courage and sparked a lifelong love of the outdoors. His passion for nature led him to a 21-year career with Salomon, a leader in ski equipment and outdoor apparel. Walt later joined Keen Footwear, where he spent the final 13 years of his career, retiring in April 2022.
Walt was known for his kindness, easygoing spirit, and genuine ability to connect with everyone he met. He was a true friend to all, and his warm smile and positive energy left a lasting impression on those around him.
Skiing was Walt’s lifelong passion. He grew up skiing with his family, and over the years, was fortunate to ski all over the United States. In retirement, he found great joy in returning to the slopes of Timberline at least once a week. He also loved hiking and biking through Oregon’s scenic landscapes, fully embracing the beauty of the Pacific Northwest.
A lifelong soccer enthusiast and die-hard Portland Timbers supporter, Walt rarely missed a match—whether local or international. His enthusiasm for the game was infectious, and he loved sharing it with family and friends.
Walt is survived by his loving wife, Jane A. Brunswig; his cherished daughters, Maggie and Laura Brunswig; his sister, Kim Clifton; and three adored grandchildren who brought him endless joy.
A Memorial Service celebrating Walt’s life will be held on Sunday, June 22, 2025, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Skyline Memorial Gardens in Portland, Oregon. All who knew and loved Walt are welcome to attend and share memories of a truly remarkable man.
Walt’s legacy of love, laughter, and adventure will live on in the hearts of those he touched. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Walter's memory may be made to U.S. National Park Service, https://www.nps.gov/getinvolved/donate.htm.
