Wan Kwai Hui's life began on August 14, 1924 in southern China in a Hakka village called Boc Lo. Surviving the Japanese invasion and subsequent civil war, he migrated to Hong Kong to work with a Swiss mission organization, where a co-worker introduced him to her daughter, who became his future bride. Wan married Hing C. Chan in 1950, and in a few short years, they were the parents of four sons.
Hard times in the post-war years meant taking whatever jobs were available, and Wan worked variously as a janitor, a nursing home cook, a taxi-driver, a merchant marine, and a truck driver. His merchant marine job took Wan all over the world, including the US, where he formed connections that eventually resulted in Wan and Hing and their sons immigrating to America, where Wan and Hing have been living since 1983, just in time to welcome the first of many grandchildren.
Wan K. Hui passed away on Dec 17, 2017 at the age of 93. He is survived by his wife, his four sons and their wives, and 11 grandchildren and their spouses.
A memorial service will take place at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, Dec 28, 2017 at the Chinese Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, 7435 SE Foster Road in Portland, Oregon.
