Wanda Miura (nee: Lee) was born in Canton, China, on March 18, 1933. She is the second of three children, with an older sister, and a younger brother, both now deceased. Her mother immigrated to the United States with her when Wanda was four years old. She grew up in Portland, Oregon, and graduated from Cleveland High School.
During her teens and early twenties, Wanda had several jobs that included working at a relative’s restaurant, self-admittedly before she was old enough to be legally employed, and as a secretary.
Wanda met Taro Miura at a Chinese New Year dance in February of 1965, and the couple got engaged the next year in April, and married on July 23, 1966. The wedding took place at First Presbyterian Church, in southwest Portland, with the wedding banquet at Rickashaw Charlie’s. They had two children, Sandra and Darren.
Wanda was an avid gardener; she spent countless hours tending to her garden, as well as reading and collecting books on the topic, and made many friends in the neighborhood by simply being outside to interact with anyone passing by. She enjoyed harvesting from her garden, and friends and family remember that Wanda often gifted fruits, vegetables, and plants that she had grown herself. A family friend recalls that Wanda would always give him advice and plants from her garden. He remembers that she would often make him “second breakfast,” and that she told him once, with a radiant smile, that “three hom bao were enough for second breakfast!”
In addition to gardening, Wanda tried her hand at many hobbies, including basket weaving, crossword puzzles, playing piano, reading, Tai Chi, and even Ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arranging.
Wanda passed away on April 11, 2022, in the home she shared with her loving husband, with her family at her side. A graveside service will be held in Lincoln Memorial Park Cemetery at 3:00 p.m., Monday, May 2, 2022.
Wanda is survived by her husband, Taro; and children, Sandra and Darren.
