On February 23, 1936 a baby boy was born, to Guster and Guthrie Chambers. In the small town of Marfa, Texas, just SE of El Paso, Texas. This baby boy would be one of 12 children, 5 handsome brothers, and 6 beautiful sisters. As he grew into a young man, he started to get into a little bit of trouble. He even created a name for himself. Becoming known as, Slick Willie, for his cunning and debonair ways. Which helped him get in and out of any situation. He traveled from state to state, allowing people to see Slick Willie in action.
On his road to mischief he met a beautiful young Christian lady by the name of Amy Lee Wrighter. And when he saw her he knew he had to have her. But she told him, if he wanted to marry her, he had to turn his life over to God. Because he loved her so much, he did just that. Changing his name from Slick Willie, to a Child of God. On August 31, 1961 they became equally yoked in Dallas, Texas. In 1961 this young God-fearing couple decided to move to Chicago to begin their life journey together. Upon settling in Chicago this young man became employed by Burlington Railroad. Where he worked as a clerk, janitor, and a truck driver. God blessed him and his loving wife with 6 children, Christopher, Andrew, Drewnita, Wanessa, Joyee, and Willie.
Between, being a husband, father, and railroad employee, he never stopped loving the Lord. In the early 70s he became an ordained minister, preaching and testifying of God’s goodness. In 1981 because he loved and cared for his family so much he moved his wife and children to Portland for a better life in a safer environment.
Now I know at this point you must be saying to yourself. Who is this man? What is his name? Please tell us! But wait there is more!
In 1998 after being a faithful employee of the Burlington Railroad he decided to retire at the age of 62 years young. In his retirement he worked at Enterprise car rental, he sold souvenirs, he even went back to school. In 2008 this man became the Assistant Pastor of Mt. Nebo Church, under Pastor Andrew Chambers. In 2016 he moved from Chicago to Portland to finally be with his family.
Now the time has come for me to tell you this man’s name. But first you must understand this man is a child of The Most High. He had a smile that would light up any room. And he was loved deeply by his family and friends.
As God sits on the throne, as the Angels stand clapping and cheering, as the pearly gates open, on July 12, 2020. We want to say farewell to Assist Pastor Willie Joe Chambers, a minister of God’s Living Word.
