MARCH 16, 1930 – JULY 12, 2020
Daniel P. Collins was born on March 16, 1930 and passed away on July 12, 2020 and is under the care of Garner Funeral Service.
As a teenager, Dan travelled to Techny, IL to study at the Society of the Divine Word Seminary, which focuses on missionary work.
After the seminary, Dan did oceanographic work in the Philippines mapping the South China Sea for the United States government.
Upon his return he embarked on a 30-year career with the U.S. government working at the Departments of Commerce and Treasury. The bulk of his time in government service was spent as a Customs and Boarder officer and Senior Caseworker at Immigration and Naturalization Service in Washington, D.C.
Dan was a fixture of St. Dominic Church in Washington D.C for more than 40 years, often spending his entire day at the church after his retirement. In addition, he was an active member of the Knights of Columbus. He never missed Bible study and was always available to lend a hand with church social events. He especially enjoyed the parish's weekly religious movie seminar.
Dan’s friends and family would also like to thank Marian Assisted Living in Beltsville, MD who took great care of Dan in his last years. They were very kind to Dan and he really enjoyed the chapel and the daily mass.
Dan had a special ability that made everyone who met him feel as though they had known him all their lives. Those who knew him best describe him as a warm, charming, and devout man who lived his faith.
He is survived by his sister Mary Bailey, sister-in-law Mary (Lynn) Collins and brother-in-law John Snell. Dan was preceded in death by his loving parents Daniel and Catherine (Mahoney) Collins; brothers John Collins and James Collins; sisters Jane Collins and Martha Snell and brother-in-law Jerry Bailey.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on July 20, 2020 at 10:00 am at St. Mary's Church with Rev. Stephen Rocker celebrant. Burial will be held on July 20, 2020 at St. Mary's Cemetery, Rt. 56, Potsdam, New York.
