Mr. Daniel E. “Dan” Fritz, age 61, of Potsdam, NY passed away suddenly on Saturday, December 29th at the Canton-Potsdam Hospital. Funeral services will be held at the United Methodist Church on Saturday, January 5th at 11 am with Rev. James Barnes II celebrant. He was born on October 12, 1951 in Lewes, Delaware. Dan married Karen Buee in December of 1990. Dan is survived by his wife Karen; he has three children in North Dakota Robby Aldrich of Valley City, ND, Aileen Fritz of Bismark, ND; and Shannon Fritz of Jamestown, ND; children Garth and Michael Fritz of Potsdam, NY; three grandchildren Kaydn Fritz, Lucian (Louie) Fritz and Jocelyn Aldrich; he has six siblings: Bruce (Teresa) Fritz West Fargo, ND; Sherry (Jerry) Kjelland of Prescott Valley, AZ; Terry D. (Kevin) O’Meara of Jamestown, ND; Dawn Flaig of Leonard, ND; Bill (Donna) Flaig Jr. of West Fargo, ND; and Tally (August) Dockter of Jamestown, ND; as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews and extended family in North Dakota and Delaware. He leaves behind many relatives and friends as well as community members grateful for his service. He is predeceased by his parents William and Kathryn (Doris) Jefferson Flaig.
Dan was employed by the University of Vermont TSP, assigned to Canton-Potsdam Hospital as a Biomedical Equipment Technician. He had recently accepted a promotion to Field Service Technician, serving a number of hospitals and clinics. He was a graduate of Detroit Lakes Technical Institute in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota and Jamestown High School in Jamestown, ND in 1969. Dan maintained biomedical equipment at hospitals in New Jersey, Maine, Michigan and Ohio prior to joining TSP and serving Canton-Potsdam Hospital. Dan also served as an A/C NavSysTech in the United States Marine Corp from 1970-1973.
Dan was an active volunteer serving his community: Kiwanis (past and distinguished Lt. Governor, Coats for Kids, the Giving Tree, K-Kids and Key Club), the Elks Lodge (Man of the Year 2007), and Cub Scout Master. He was “Santa Claus,” handing out candy canes during charity basketball games, at the Hospital’s holiday party, and even spreading cheer with his trademark booming voice by visiting patients on Christmas Day. Dan was always ready to lend a hand wherever he was needed.
