Born in Parishville NY, Richard graduated from Parishville-Hopkinton Central School, carrying forward the small-town roots that would shape a life of steady commitment—and a sense of humor that could lighten a room without ever asking for the spotlight.
Richard served in the Army during the Korean War. After his service, he co-owned Bicknell Bros. with his brother, Robert, building a working life grounded in partnership, reliability, and the kind of good-natured wit that makes long days feel shorter.
On August 15, 1953, Richard married his high school sweetheart, Linnie Hotaling. Together they built a family and a life marked by loyalty, love, and laughter that didn’t need to be loud to be memorable.
He loved to golf and was a 50+ year member of Potsdam Town & Country Club and he liked hunting—pastimes that suited him well, offering equal parts patience, stories worth retelling, and the occasional moment that became funnier every time it was told.
Richard also gave his time to the community, serving as President of the BOCES School Board, as a member of the Parishville-Hopkinton School Board, and as Assessor for the town of Parishville—roles he approached with care, common sense, and a steady, quietly humorous perspective.
Richard is survived by his wife Linnie Bicknell; daughter Patricia (David) Stone; son Richard Bicknell; grandchildren Amy Kelso, Benjamin Stone, Maila Bicknell, Gema Bicknell, Alec Bicknell, Cole Bicknell; great grandchild Wrenlee Grace Bicknell; and sister Carolyn Stacy. He was predeceased by parents, Ralph and Ella (Crump) Bicknell and brother Robert Bicknell.
Visitation will be Friday, November 6, 2026 from 10am to 11am at Garner Funeral Service, Potsdam followed by a graveside service with military honors at Chapel Hill Cemetery, Parishville with Pastor Lee Sweeney, officiating.
