Robert C. James, 89, passed away July 30, 2026. Born July 29, 1937, Robert was a longtime resident of Hanawa Falls, New York, and will be remembered for the steady gentleness of his presence, the devotion he showed to those he loved, and the quiet resilience that carried him through life’s seasons with grace.
In his early years, Robert attended the Potsdam Central School District, where he threw himself into the camaraderie and discipline of sports, playing both hockey and football—interests that would remain close to him for a lifetime, not only in what he played, but in what he loved to watch in the years that followed.
Robert served in the Army for two years and was stationed in Texas and Germany. Through that time and beyond, he was known as a hard-working man—reliable, capable, and unassuming—someone who met responsibility head-on and still found room for humor, the kind that eased a room and made ordinary moments feel lighter.
On November 21, 1964, Robert and his wife, Rebecca James, began a marriage rooted in loyalty and care. In the years they shared, and in the family they built, Robert’s kind heart showed itself in countless everyday ways—through patience, through showing up, and through the simple gift of being present. After Rebecca’s passing, he continued to hold her close in the way he lived, honoring what they had built together.
Robert’s hands were rarely still. He had a deep love for mechanics—especially cars, snowmobiles, and race cars—and he brought the same steady skill to carpentry. He found joy in the outdoors through hunting and fishing, and he never lost his affection for hockey, whether playing himself or watching his children and grandchildren on the ice. He also cherished cruises and vacations with Becky, and some of his most contented time was spent at camp at Joe Indian Pond, where the pace of life matched his appreciation for simple, meaningful days.
He was proud to be part of the Elks Club, the Joe Indian Pond Hunting Association, and the Potsdam Hall of Fame—connections that reflected a life lived with commitment, fellowship, and a genuine appreciation for community.
Robert is survived by his sons, Michael James (Terri) and Jeffrey James (MaryJo); his grandsons, Cole James, Luke James, Zachary James (Hannah), and Nicholas James; his brother-in-law, Robert Green; and his great granddaughter, Rorie James. He was predeceased by his wife, Rebecca James; his sister, Barbara Papayanakos (Peter); his brother, Roger James (Joan); his mother, Charie James; and his father, Carson James.
Visitation will be held at Garner Funeral Service, Potsdam, on August 4, 2026, from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm. A Funeral Service will take place at Garner Funeral Service, Potsdam on August 5, 2026, at 11:00 am, followed by a burial service at 12:00 pm. Robert will be laid to rest at St Mary’s Cemetery in Potsdam.
