Shirley Henrietta Belyea, age 101 passed on June 12, 2026 at the Massena Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. She was the daughter of Ann Calnon and Rex Henrietta of Fulton, NY (formerly of Potsdam), where she was born and raised.
In August of 1944, Shirley married Robert Belyea, at whose side she remained for 72 years until his passing in December of 2015.
Shirley is survived by her daughter Deborah A. Cady of Hannawa Falls and is predeceased by their son Eric in 1987.
Also surviving are nieces Diana "Dee" White of Knoxville, Tennessee and Martha (David) White of Gracey, Kentucky, as well as one nephew Don (Fern) White of Cary, North Carolina and many Calnon cousins.
A strong affection for Potsdam began early for Shirley as she summered yearly on Waverly St. with her maternal grandparents Patrick and Margaret Calnon. Later, while studying at the Rochester Business Institute, Shirley found herself in the company of three roommates, all from Potsdam- one of whom was Ann Belyea, destined to become Shirley's future sister in law. Upon settling in Potsdam permanently Shirley worked for over 30 years as dental assistant for both Dr. Hart and Dr. Regan until her retirement. In retirement years Shirley became an avid player of both Bridge and Mahjongg and a noted collector of antique toys.
Blessed with a following of friends from all walks of life and all range of age, Shirley was respected for her candor, revered for her rapier wit, and will be forever missed by them all.
At the request of the family there will be no calling hours. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Potsdam Humane Society, 17 Madrid Avenue, Potsdam, NY 13676. She never met a cat she didn't like.
Arrangements for cremation are with the Garner Funeral Service. Shirley will be laid to rest with her husband at St. Mary's Cemetery in Potsdam at a later date. Condolences for Shirley's family can be shared @www.garnerfh.com.
