Sylvia D. Hayes

Ms. Sylvia "Sally" Hayes, age 83 of Baldwinsville, NY and formerly of Massena, NY passed away on June 30 at Crouse Hospital in Syracuse, NY. A funeral service will be held at St. Mary's Church at 105 Cornell Avenue in Massena, NY on Friday July 6 at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow the service at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Potsdam. Sally was a social studies and English teacher at Clarence Central High School in New York State in the late 1950s and early 1960s and Norwood-Norfolk High School in the late 1960s, and an English teacher at Massena Central High School from 1975-1995. She was born on November 2, 1934 in Warsaw, NY to the late Basil Doody and Dorothy Maloney. She was a graduate of Letchworth (N.Y.) Central High School and earned a bachelor’s degree from Albany State Teachers College (now SUNY at Albany) and a Master's degree from the University of Michigan. She was married to the late Daniel Hayes of Potsdam and Massena, NY, on July 14, 1962 at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Silver Springs NY. Sally was also a homemaker for many years prior to and after her retirement from teaching, and sewed clothing and later quilts that she generously gave to family members. Sally also traveled extensively in the U.S., Canada and Europe, and was an amateur genealogist who drafted a manuscript summarizing her findings and thoughts on family and national history.

She is survived by her children Michael (Cosette) Hayes of Baltimore, MD, Sara (John) Dalton of Canandaigua, NY, Sheila (Michael) Heaton of Baldwinsville, NY and Susan (Mark) Penhollow of Baldwinsville, NY, 9 grandchildren Margaret and Patrick Dalton; Matthew, Madeleine, and Emma Sara Heaton; Joseph Hayes and Autumn Cangelosi; Owen and Nora Penhollow; two great grandchildren; eleven nieces and nephews; and a sister-in-law Joyce DelBalzo, and she is predeceased by a sister Geraldine Smith, brother- and sister-in-law George and Barbara Barney, brothers-in-law Eugene DelBalzo and Robert Smith and nephew Thomas Smith.
