Yvonne Ashlaw

Mrs. Yvonne Ashlaw, age 70 of Hannawa Falls, NY passed away at her daughters home in Winthrop, NY on October 2, 2018. There will be no calling hours or funeral service. Arrangements are with the Garner Funeral Service. On line condolences can be shared at Survived by her son Charles (Aleisia) Ashlaw; daughters Jo-Anne (James) Dishaw and LaRonda Ashlaw; grandchildren Jesserlyn Ashlaw, Derrick Dishaw, Adam Ashlaw, Joshua Ashlaw, a great grandson Gavin Dishaw and a great granddaughter Zoey Ashlaw. Yvonne was born on January 2, 1948 in Potsdam, NY to Bert Jones and Estella Simonds. She was a graduate of Parishville-Hopkinton Central School. Yvonne worked for years for St. Lawrence County as the Nutrition Manager for the Office of the Aging in Canton, NY; retiring from there in 2009. Prior to her retirement she worked at St. Lawrence University and also was the owner and operator of the Edge of Town Restaurant for 9 years. She spent her life selflessly caring for others. Countless foster girls over 28 years felt her capacity for loving and giving. At her restaurant she would feed those who could not pay and brighten everyone’s day. When she delivered meals to the elderly she stayed and talked to them and made sure they were healthy and smiling before she left them. When she managed the nutrition site she did special things for the elderly people she fed. She would make homemade soup and tell them to bring a bowl on Friday and send them soup for the weekend. She would knit them all slippers, dish clothes and scarfs. Her family never doubted her love for them. She always put them before herself. She taught them compassion, work ethic and love of family. She did all of this in good spirit and smiling despite many hurdles, hard times, heart breaks and illnesses. She was an inspiration to all of those whose lives she touched.

Dearest Ashlaw family- My heart goes out to you for the loss of this precious woman from your lives. The void she leaves is, without question, profound. Yvonne was one of my favorite foster mothers to work with over the years. She opened her home and heart to some of the most challenged and broken young children, helped them to envision and believe in a brighter future and set them surely on their path. Yvonne appeared at her door countless times in the middle of the night to receive yet another frightened soul to make feel safe and secure in her warm, loving home. How many lives she touched we will never know. We can be assured, though, that she earned a special place next to the Lord where she will shine forever in the minds and hearts of those of us who knew and loved her. God bless you all and carry you through your sorrow with the knowledge that she is watching and comforting you, in typical Yvonne fashion.

Yvonne worked with me at Edwards Nutrition site. She worked hard, caring for the seniors. She was a great cook and always made a little extra so she could send some to the ones that werent able to get their supper meal. She started as my employee, but turned into a great friend. She helped me get into foster care , because she loved children so. Condolences to the family, she will be greatly missed.
