
Alan (“Al”) Bruce Coombs, 91, of Prattsburgh, NY, died of natural causes on Saturday, May 6, 2017, at the Garwoods United Methodist Church, the same church he attended while growing up. He was born on February 15, 1926, in Burns, NY, the son of Frank Herbert Coombs and Agnes Cornelia Karr Coombs and attended the Garwoods District School and Canaseraga Central School. He served in the US Navy during WW II.
Al married the love of his life, Grace Amelia Kennedy, on October 4, 1947, in Pulteney, NY. They formed and operated Coombs Service Inc., an Agway store, for more than 2 decades. He was active in the community: Boy Scouts, Prattsburgh United Methodist Church, Rotary International, American Legion, Gideons and the Prattsburgh Historical Society. Self-taught and always eager to learn, his hobbies included ballroom dancing, cabinet making, horticulture, computers, genealogy and raising orchids.
Al is survived by his wife, Grace, his son Robert Coombs and daughter-in-law, Teresa (Prattsburgh), 5 grandchildren: Grace Coombs-Bassallo (Renato, Lancaster, PA), Maria Elena Coombs-Ricciardi (Mark, Wellington, FL), Pilar Coombs (Orlando, FL), Martin Coombs (Jennifer, Grand Island, NY), Ana Brightful (Jason, Brighton, NY), 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. His son, James Coombs, and his siblings, Eleanor Hills, Richard Coombs and Gerald Coombs, predecease him.
Alan’s easy smile, quick offer to help and love will be sorely missed.
Visiting hours are at the Prattsburgh United Methodist Church on Thursday, May 11, 10:00 AM – Noon with the funeral service immediately following.
Donations in his memory may be made to the Prattsburgh Historical Society or the Prattsburgh Post of the American Legion.
