Anthony Wayne Cox
December 19, 1948 – December 21, 2019
Anthony “Tony” Wayne Cox of Prattville, Alabama passed away at the age of 71 on December 21st, 2019. He was surrounded by his family, who for some time won’t be quite sure what to do without his constant instructions to “Call me when you get there,” and “Lord, hun, be careful out there, there’s nutcases everywhere.” Tony is survived by his adoring wife of 51 years, Diane, two daughters, Melissa (Tony) and Angie (Seth), and his only son Chuck (Jennifer), with whom he shared many qualities including an inability to quite keep his pants all the way up. He was blessed with six grandchildren and three great-grands, who were his pride and joy: Amanda (Justin), Michael (Natalie), Kristen, Anna, Evan, Karlie, Isabella, Emmett and Zaiden. He is also survived by his mother, Athalee and beloved sister Anita (Kenneth), who will miss his daily phone calls. Tony was preceded in death by his father, Charlie, and his older brother Stanley. We can only imagine what those three are up to right now; we wouldn’t rule out a playful amount of explosives. Tony worked most of his life in the commercial construction industry, He was a loyal friend to many coworkers, a fair and empathetic supervisor, and when called for, a justice-demanding pain to deserving company bosses. He will certainly be remembered for his incredible work ethic, unwavering integrity, and frequent displays of good-natured mischief. Tony leaves behind not only a legacy of intense and devoted love, but also the importance of laughter even in, or perhaps especially in, sad times. He would want that tears shed for him be from fits of laughter rather than mournful sadness; we also know he will let slide the moments when we are unable to hold to that wish. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. on December 27th at Ridout's Funeral Home in Prattville, with a service following at 11. It would have been his wishes that his family and friends come as they are to say their final goodbyes rather than dressing up, so please wear your blue jeans if you like, as he will be in his. In lieu of flowers, Tony would have much preferred donations to St. Jude Children’s Hospital in his memory.
