

Dona Gay Ernsbarger, 78, passed away on June 4, 2026, in Hayneville, Alabama, after a long and courageous battle with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP). She faced her illness with the same fierce independence, grace, and quiet strength that defined her life. Born in Texas, Dona was known for her gentle spirit, her bright and welcoming smile, and her unwavering kindness.
Dona was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She and her husband shared 50 years of marriage, a partnership marked by devotion and deep affection. Her family was her greatest pride, and her love for them was unwavering.
Dona devoted 24 years to teaching Kindergarten at Prattville Kindergarten, where she poured love, patience, and creativity into every child she taught. She was passionate about teaching literacy to young children and had a deep love for children’s literature. She earned a Bachelor of Social Work from Abilene Christian University, as well as Bachelor and Master degrees in early childhood education from Auburn University at Montgomery.
She was a faithful member of Prattville Church of Christ. She enjoyed shopping, reading, and exploring her family’s history through genealogy. Her warmth and gentle presence touched everyone who knew her.
Dona is preceded in death by her husband, Robert D. Ernsbarger, and her mother, Carmen Clay West. She is survived by her daughter, Dr. Sara Bicard (David); her son, Eric Ernsbarger; and her cherished grandchildren, Niles and Sadie Bicard.
The family would like to thank Gentiva Hospice, Orchard Healthcare and Rehabilitation, and her many caregivers for their compassion and support.
Dona’s legacy lives on in the countless children she taught, the friends she uplifted, and the family she cherished.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, June 14, 2026 from 3PM until 5PM at Ridout's Prattville Chapel, 347 E. Main St., Prattville, AL. 36067. Funeral Services will be at 11:00AM on Monday, June 15, 2026 at Ridout's Prattville Chapel, 347 E. Main St., Prattville, Al. 36067 with burial to follow at Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo.
