RUCKER, George, 86, passed away Friday, May 24, 2013 after an extended illness. Visitation will be held at Ridout’s Prattville Chapel Sunday, May 26, 2013 from 12:30 PM until 1:30 PM. Graveside services will follow at 2:00 PM at Old Kingston Historical Cemetery.
He was preceded in death by his wife of fifty years, Hixie Carter Rucker; his parents Fred and Pauline Hicks Rucker; two sisters, Margaret Golson Atchison and Edna Prescott; one brother, Merton Rucker. He served in the United States Army during World War II. He worked over thirty years with the railroad. Following retirement from the railroad he raised cattle, an activity that he enjoyed very much. After many years he was no longer able to continue farming because of ill health. A legacy achievement of George Rucker was his personal actions and leadership in the restoration of the Old Kingston Cemetery. For many years he had been personally maintaining some parts of the cemetery, the burial location of many members of Rucker related families. He then provided leadership to a community wide effort to clean up the cemetery. He worked with interested residents of the Old Kingston Community, and together established a committee dedicated to restoration of the cemetery with provisions for continuing care. He served for many years as President and Historian of the Old Kingston Cemetery Committee which became an active group. A crowning achievement was his and other members of the committee and community to gain approval to officially designate the Cemetery as a historical site and as the OLD KINGSTON HISTORICAL CEMETERY. George Rucker had many talents including being a natural historian and a keen interest in preserving family history; a strong work ethic throughout his life that represented the best in the citizens of this community and the country; and dedicated and caring support for his family and others. He will be greatly missed by his immediate and extended family. He is survived by his daughter Rebecca Smith, grandson Chris Smith, one son Lee Rucker and brother Maxwell (Pete) Rucker (Betty), Perry, GA, and sixteen nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Old Kingston Historical Cemetery, P.O. Box 681021, Prattville, AL 36068.
