A third generation native of California, George was born on February 6, 1924 in Ceres, California, the son of Jess and Melba Winn, both of whose great-grand parents were notable pioneers settling in the San Francisco Bay area (Maternal) in 1850 and Santa Clara Valley (Paternal) in early 1860's. George, following a military career covering a thirty-three year period — which spanned three wars (U.S. Navy as a Combat Air Crewman in WWII; USAF as a USAF Special Investigations Agent and Staff Officer in Korea and Viet Nam — also served as the National President of two exclusive veterans' organizations: the Association of Former 051 Special Agents (AFOSISA) and Three War Veterans of America. At the time of his death he was proudly serving as the Executive Secretary/Treasurer of the Three War Survivors' League and its Last Man Standing Club. After retiring from the USAF, he was employed as the Security Superintendent for the Rancho Seco Atomic Energy Facility near Sacramento and subsequently opened a licensed private investigative agency in the San Jose area. At age 72, he and his second wife (Charlene Dillard) moved to the retirement community of Mountain Home, AR where they enjoyed full retirement for some 14 years before her death in 2010.
In addition to his second wife, he was proceeded in death by both parents, his only sister, Charlene W. Diehl of Phoenix, AZ; his first wife, Colleen A. Smith of Whitehall, MT; his eldest son, Gary Creighton Winn of Seattle, WA area. He is survived by his son, Colonel Gregory Creighton Winn (wife Mari Lea) of Prattville, AL; step-son Scott Dillard of Henderson, NV; six grandchildren: Geoffrey Creighton Winn (Christy) ; Dawna Robinson (Grant); Dr. Katherine Winn all of Prattville, AL; Ellie Winn of Emeryville, CA; Patrick G.C. Winn of Moscow ID; and Ian G.C. Winn of Enumclaw, WA; and eight great grandchildren: Ashlyn, Grayson C. and Gavin C. Winn; Dresden Merritt; Ava Claire and Bowin Cade Robinson all of AL; and Caroline Grace and Christian Gabriel Winn of WA.
A joint inurnment of both George and Charlene's remains will be at Arlington National Cemetery with private memorial services held by members of the family.
