James Donald Gilliam, lovingly known as “Sonny” and “Papa,” passed away peacefully on October 3, 2024, at the age of 85 in Prattville, Alabama. His life was defined by his deep faith and unconditional love for his family.
Born on June 2, 1939, to Leroy and Louise Gilliam, Sonny was a man of quiet strength and steadfast values whose life reflected his devotion to God and family. Sonny leaves behind his devoted wife of 63 years, Rebecca (Becky) Gilliam, who was not only his lifelong partner but also his greatest confidante and best friend, in addition to his younger brother, Larry. A loving father to Don (Kelli), Lynn (Darrin), and Randall, Sonny poured his heart into his children, instilling them with his wisdom, patience, and unwavering support. As a proud grandfather to Hannah (Malon), Harrison, Haley (Noah), Holly (Chase), and Devin, he took
great joy in being a constant source of encouragement and a guiding light in their lives. He also treasured his role as a great-grandfather to James and Elliott and eagerly awaited the arrival of his newest great-grandson, Callum.
Sonny’s life was grounded in his unshakeable belief that putting God first, family second and work third was the key to true fulfillment and success. He lived by this principle every day, serving others with humility, leading by example, and spreading kindness wherever he went.
Sonny’s legacy of faith, love, and integrity will continue to inspire all who knew him. As the family gathers to celebrate his life, they find comfort in knowing that “Papa” is now in the presence of his Savior, having heard the words, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”
