Wanda Greene Drasheff, of Prattville, was received into the loving arms of Jesus on Friday, July 11, 2025, after a private and valiant battle with breast cancer. She was 77 years old. We are sure that she was welcomed with the words, “Well done, my good and faithful servant.”
She was proceeded in death by her mother, Robbie Lee Greene, her father, Rupert D. Greene, Jr, and her in-laws, Barbara and George Drasheff. She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 57 years, Donald W. Drasheff, Sr., of Prattville, Alabama. She leaves behind three beautiful children and their spouses, Donald W., Jr. and Suzy Drasheff, of Montverde, Florida; David M. and Jaime Drasheff of Colorado Springs, Colorado; and Betsy D. and Tommy Jones of Ozark, Alabama, as well as four amazing grandchildren, Mary Thomas Jones of Opelika, Alabama; Zackary Jones of Troy, Alabama; and Gabriel and Chloe Jones, both of Ozark, Alabama. She leaves behind one most-beloved sister, Anne Greene Rawls (Lee) of Windermere, Florida; and two half-sisters, Jennifer (Robert) Phillips and Dafni Greene.
Wanda was born on July 12, 1947, in Troy, Alabama. She was the first child of Robbie and Rupert Greene. She grew up in Troy, Alabama, with her precious sister and best friend, Anne, and they were constantly surrounded by loving grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. In the 11th grade her family moved to Florala, Alabama, and she graduated from Florala High School. Wanda attended Troy State University for her first three years and was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority, Delta Delta Chapter’s, first pledge class. Wanda was also a Delta Chi White Carnation Girl. She finished her senior year at Judson College with a degree in elementary education.
In June of 1968, Wanda married her college sweetheart, Don, and their adventure began. She was a dedicated military officer’s wife that was so honored and proud of her husband’s incredible 38 years of service to our country in the Army National Guard, and Army Reserve. It takes a special woman to be the wife of a Special Forces soldier who wears the Green Beret, but she did it with love and strength each time that he was deployed. In return, Don doted on Wanda, from the moment he laid eyes on her at Troy University’s student center, up until her last breath on this earth.
Wanda started her 28-year teaching career in Selma, Alabama, before moving on to schools in Ozark and Wetumpka, Alabama, then finally settling at Prattville Intermediate School teaching Language Arts for the 6th grade. She was a most beloved teacher and the winner of the WAKA Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Education. Once you were a student of Mrs. Drasheff, you were always one of her kids. She had many special students and made some of the most precious friends through her years of teaching.
Wanda wore many hats and was called many things, such as Christian, daughter, sister, wife, friend and teacher, but her most favorite names of all were “Mama” and “Gigi.” Her three children were the apples of her eye; her pride and joy. She loved more than anything to take them shopping, dress them up, attend their school and sports events, take them all over to comic shops, and she was always, always their most encouraging cheerleader at every age and stage in their lives. She taught them to love big, work hard, and pray even harder. She was their biggest prayer warriors, and it is by the wings of her prayers that her children are the amazing humans they are today. The only thing Wanda loved more than being a mother, was being a Gigi. She once told someone that she was born to be a Gigi! There is nobody she loved to spoil more, yell loud for and dress up than her grands. From the very beginning she was always willing to care for them, hold them, pray for them and sneak off with them to their favorite toy stores. She leaves behind a beautiful legacy of love worth following for her grandchildren.
The most precious and important thing in Wanda’s life was being a follower of Christ. Not a day went by that she didn’t spend time with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Every evening, she could be found at her kitchen table reading and taking notes in her Bible. Always the student, she constantly found new things in His Word that spoke to her, giving her hope and encouragement. She never hesitated to share the gospel and hope of Heaven with strangers she would meet out and about in her daily life.
A private family graveside funeral will be held at Oak Hill Cemetery in Prattville on Wednesday July 16, 2025 at 11:00 AM with her son-in-law, Tommy Jones, officiating. Pallbearers for her funeral will be Don Drasheff, Jr., David Drasheff, Zack Jones, Gabriel Jones, Marty Roney and Stephen Perdue.
