He was pre-deceased by his beloved wife Hennie, his parents Hector and Bernice Cook, his parents-in-law Bill and Christine Visserman, and his brother-in-law Taede Visserman.
He is remembered by his children Jacqueline (Randy), Roger (Emily), Neil (Tara), grandchildren Sebastian, Jordan, Mikaila, Samuel and Benjamin, brother Hector (Brigid), and sisters-in-law Christine and Eva and their families. He is also remembered by Hennie’s Dutch cousins, a multitude of family members in Eastern Canada, and many long-time friends.
Gerald was born in Nova Scotia and ventured west as a young man of 18 to work for the Hudson’s Bay Company in Hazelton, B.C. It was there that he met Hennie, a young sales clerk. They married in 1960 and started their family. He then began working for the Federal Government; he and his family lived in many places in B.C. throughout his career, eventually landing in Terrace. We remember him and mom taking us camping, canoeing, fishing, hunting, and going exploring on Sunday drives. Our May long weekends camping in the VW on the beach at Tofino, our many trips to the farm, skiing in Jasper, travelling to Hawaii, and a wonderful road trip to California were all special times with dad and mom.
After retirement, dad and mom became farmers of sorts, buying a small acreage in Sinclair Mills, where they raised chickens, grew an incredible vegetable garden, and became regular vendors at the Prince George Farmer’s Market. Later they moved into Prince George and continued an active life of travelling and volunteering. They travelled to many places in the world, but Dad was especially fond of their warm winter vacations in Mexico with family and friends. During summers, they RV’d throughout the province attending music festivals and golfing with friends along the way. As a volunteer, dad was involved in the National Association of Federal Retirees, was an annual volunteer in the Salvation Army Christmas Kettlebell program, and enjoyed organizing crib tournaments at the North Central Senior’s Association. He was an ardent Prince George Cougars hockey fan, a master at Sudoku (the extreme challenge level!) and loved doing jigsaw puzzles.
This past year was hard for dad. He missed mom terribly and we have faith he is now happily reunited with her.
Interment will be held at a later date at the New Hazelton Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Prince George Hospice Palliative Care Society (pghpcs.ca).
Rest in peace Dad.
