GAINES, ABNER J., 95, passed away Thursday, August 16, 2018. He was the husband of the late Rosalyn (Berenson) Gaines. Abner was born in Atlantic City, NJ, the son of the late Jacob and Lilly Ginsburg. He is survived by his daughter Barbara A. Gaines and her husband Richard D. King Jr.; sister Molly Bailin; and grandchildren Liliana, Robert, and Thomson King, nieces Laura-Beth Sholkoff (Jack), Debbie and Dori Bailin, nephew Ari Berenson (Ilyana), and many, many friends.
Abner was born in Atlantic City, NJ, the son of the late Jacob and Lilly Ginsburg. In 1944, he graduated from the University of Michigan, and then served as a Marine in World War II, with active duty in the Pacific and China. Upon return to the US, he obtained a Master’s degree in library science from the University of Pennsylvania, and worked in the Temple University library in Philadelphia. In the early 1960’s, he was recruited to the University of Rhode Island as an Associate Professor of Library Science, where he remained until his retirement. After retirement, he and his wife traveled the world, ultimately visiting all seven continents. In addition to travel, he had a great love of books, reading, justice, and football.
