

South Kingstowwn Alfred U. Barbery, Jr., 67, of South Jerry Cove Road, a retired Providence Firefighter and owner of Universal Ambulance Service, died unexpectedly Monday evening, October 14, 2013, after becoming ill while vacationing in Stuart, Florida. He was the beloved husband of Linda M. (Giroux) Barbery for the past forty-six years. Born in Providence, he was a son of Gertrude E. (Seddon) Barbery and the late Alfred U. Barbery, Sr. Al served his country proudly in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War from 1963 to 1967. Upon his honorable discharge, he was appointed to the Providence Fire Department in 1969 and served on Engine 7, Rescue 1, and most of his career as Lieutenant on Rescue 2, Hartford Avenue Station. He retired in 1987 after 18 years of service. During his career, he received numerous citations and awards for outstanding work on the job. In 1979, he founded Universal Ambulance Service, and the company has continued to operate successfully under Al's direction for the past thirty-four years. He was a member of the Providence Firefighters Union, Local 799, the Retired Providence Police and Firefighters Association, the Providence Permanent Fireman's Relief Association and the South County Rod & Gun Club. Al was an avid sport fisherman for many years. In addition to his wife Linda, and his mother Gertrude, he leaves a daughter, Dawn Barbery-Fortin, and her husband, Paul; two brothers, Raymond U. Barbery, Sr. and John J. Barbery; a sister, Charlene E. Rainey; six grandchildren, Alfred IV, Krystina, and Joseph Barbery, and Jeremey, Jace and Jaydin Beecher; three great-grandchildren, Davian, Keira and Vayda Rose. He was pre-deceased by his son, Alfred U. Barbery, III. The funeral will be held Tuesday, at 9:15 am, from the Russell J. Boyle & Son Funeral Home, 331 Smith Street, Providence. Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 am in Saint Clement Church, 111 Long Street, Warwick. Burial, with military honors, will be in Saint Ann Cemetery, Cranston. Visiting hours Monday, 4 - 8 pm.
