Born in Providence, he was a son of the late John and Genevieve (Tedesco) Cardarelli.
Alfred, known to everyone as Al, grew up in Providence and served in the Army National Guard. He was proud to be a musician all his life. He played six different musical instruments and was the bandleader of Al Carter and The Bluejays. He also worked for the Providence School Department until his retirement.
He loved walking in Lincoln Woods, eating delicious meals, and laughing with family and friends. Al had a quick wit, a vibrant personality, and a gift for making everyone smile. He was a die-hard fan of the Yankees and the Patriots. He was a man of unshakeable faith, walking in the light of the Blessed Mother.
He was the devoted father of Lauri Cardarelli-Medeiros and her husband, Anthony, Alfred R. Cardarelli, Jr. and his wife, Claudia, and Cherylann Bertoncini and her husband, Todd; cherished grandfather of Caitlin Cardarelli, Isabella Bertoncini, Olivia Cardarelli, Petra Bertoncini, Crystalin (Medeiros) Mahull and her husband, Tom, and Anthony Medeiros; and great-grandfather of Lilliana. He was predeceased by his siblings, John “Smokey” Cardarelli, William Cardarelli and his wife, Karen, Doris Mattera and her husband, Joseph, and Evelyn Ribiero. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Jean Cardarelli.
Visitation will be held on Friday, October 9, 2026, from 9:00 AM - 10:00 AM in the PONTARELLI-MARINO FUNERAL HOME, 971 Branch Avenue, Providence, followed by a service in the funeral home at 10:00 AM. Burial with Military Honors will be private.
