

Carol was born in Shenandoah, Iowa to Ray and Anna Lucinda (Boettner) Matkin and was raised in Rock Port, Missouri. She graduated from Rock Port High School and Central Methodist College (BA, Spanish), the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign (MA, Spanish Literature), and Rosary College (MA, Library Science). She married John Martínez on June 29, 1957, in Urbana. They settled in Highland Park, Illinois to rear their family. Carol volunteered for educational and environmental organizations in the community and worked in the reference department at Highland Park Public Library for twenty years, offering services in Spanish and English. She was an avid gardener and reader.
Carol is survived by her loving husband, John; her children, David (Teresa Becker), Michael, Andrew (Judith Warburton) and Anne Marie; her grandchildren, Michael Robert (Jacqueline Pigeon), Christina Anne (Larry Martins), Marianna Grace (Samuel Kelly), John David, James Edward, and Hadley Warburton; and her great grandchildren, Zachary, Elsie, Luke, Sofia, and Mila.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial Saturday August 2, 2025, at 9:30am at St. Pius V Catholic Church on 240 Eaton St. in Providence. A private burial service will follow.
