

East GreenwichDoctor Michael E. Wiggins, 48, of Westfield Drive, passed away suddenly on April 8, 2009, in Breckenridge, Colorado, while vacationing with his family. He is survived by his loving wife, Dr. Doreen (Leyden) Wiggins, and five children, Stephen, Brenden, Kai, Olivia, and Jade. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Stanton Wiggins, and his brother, Robert Stanton Wiggins, Jr. He also leaves his beloved mother, Christine (Hill) Wiggins, of Florida; a sister Karen Wiggins, of Massachusetts; a brother, Steven Wiggins, and his wife Debbie Wiggins; a niece, Hannah, and a nephew, Bo Wiggins, all of North Carolina.Mike was born in White Plains, New York, and received his Bachelor of Science Degree, Magna Cum Laude, in Biomedical Engineering from Vanderbilt University in 1983, where he was a member of the Tau Beta Pi (Engineering Honor Society) and an officer of Sigma Chi. He graduated second in his medical school class at George Washington University, in 1988, Alpha Omega Alpha. Michael was the recipient of numerous awards including Julius Neviaser Award in Orthopedics. He completed his residency at Brown University School of Medicine, where he received the Heffenreffer Fellow for the Medical Sciences in 1991. He received national accolades for achieving Excellence in Research Award from the American Society for Sports Medicine in 1992. He went on to complete a Fellowship in Orthopedic Sports Medicine from Yale University and was Board Certified in Orthopedic Surgery in 1998. Upon completion of his fellowship at Yale University, Mike became a clinical instructor in Orthopedics at Brown University School of Medicine. He was on staff at the Miriam Hospital, Rhode Island Hospital, Women & Infants Hospital, Saint Joseph Hospital, and Roger Williams Hospital. In 1998, Dr. Wiggins founded Foundry Sports Medicine and Fitness, in Providence, where he served as president, primary physician, and visionary. He was a managing physician of Southern New England Surgery Center, and a member of Cherrystone Angel Investments. He published numerous articles and book chapters, starting from his days in medical school and throughout his medical career. He was a guest lecturer on orthopedic medicine at both the local and national level, and frequently appeared on local radio and television programs.Mike had an innate passion for business, and earned a Master in Business Administration Degree from Babson College, graduating Magna Cum Laude, in 2006.Mike shared his many skills with the community, and was Head Team Physician for Bryant University, Burrillville High School, LaSalle Academy, The Wheeler School, The Lincoln School, and West Warwick High School. True to the Wiggins family tradition, Mike believed in philanthropy; he was a generous supporter of the Lance Armstrong Foundation, East Greenwich Little League, and Friends Way, an organization that he and his wife Doreen are Chairpersons for the Annual Gala.Mike was an accomplished athlete completing many marathons, triathlons, the Providence 70.3 triathlon in 2008, the Mount Washington Hill Climb, and the 143 Mile Brewery to Brewery bike race. He was a certified Spinning instructor, trained in medical qi chong, and believed in a holistic approach to life in all his endeavors. He never missed any of his children's athletic competitions, always cheering or filming from the sidelines. He devoted time to his family, and greatly enjoyed attending Red Sox and Patriot games with family and friends. He is deeply loved by his family and will be truly missed by those who knew and loved him. The funeral service will be held Thursday, at 11:00 am, in Christ Church, 1025 Main Street, East Greenwich, to which relatives and friends are invited.
