

Providence: Byrne, Donald M., 80, of Providence, passed away on Thursday at the Elmhurst Extended Care Facility. He was the husband of Eleanor F. (Quirk) Byrne for 52 years. Born in Providence, he was the son of the late Martin P. and Margaret V.(McDermott) Byrne. Donald was a Firefighter for the Providenc Fire Department for 16 years, retiring as a Lieutenant. He later was an Arson Investigator with the Rhode Island State Fire Marshal's Office for 23 years, retiring in 1997.He was a member of the Providence Firefighters Union Local 799, the Providence Permanent Firemen's Relief Association and the Retired Police and Fire Association. He was a World War II Navy Veteran. He was a softball umpire for the Providence Umpires Association for many years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Our Lady of Fatima Council # 4331 and was a member and Past President of the Shamrock Society of North Providence. Besides his wife, he is survived by his children, Karen F. Corry and her husband William of Smithfield and Michael P. Byrne and his wife Kathleen of Coventry, a brother, Lawrence P. Byrne of Seekonk, two sisters, Margaret Morrissey of North Kingstown and Maureen A. Piampiano of Scituate and four grandchildren, Michael, Daniel, Steven and Jacqueline Byrne. He was the brother of the late John P. Byrne, Martin T. Byrne and Kathleen M. Bathgate. His funeral will be held on Tuesday at 8:45am from the Russell J. Boyle & Son Funeral Home, 331 Smith St., Providence. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00am in St. Pius V. Church, Eaton St. Providence. Burial with military honors will be in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston. Visiting hours, Monday 4-8pm.
