He was born in Middleborough, MA, the son of the late Lawrence and Patrice (Mullen) McGrath. Husband of the late Marsha A. (Quinn) McGrath. Father of Douglas J. McGrath and his wife Beth, Kelli A. McGrath DiDomenico and her husband Jeffrey, and Shawn L. McGrath and his wife Marni. Grandfather of Jacob
and Noah DiDomenico, Austin, Morgan, and Nathan McGrath and soon to arrive a great-grandson. Brother of Paul McGrath and his wife Shannon and the late Terry McGrath and his wife Paula.
Douglas was a devoted husband, father, brother, and friend who was born on Feb. 15th, 1943, and graduated from High School in 1961. He went on to pursue a degree in business at Johnson and Wales University. He utilized his degree to nurture and start a Real Estate Corporation, which housed several units within Central Falls along with other endeavors throughout his lifetime. All while maintaining his career as a federal supervisor at the US Postal Service. He was also honored to serve in the US Navy.
Douglas met and married his childhood sweetheart, Marsha McGrath, whom he devoted and shared his life with for over 50 years. His wife and family were his pride and joy.
He was an avid golfer and club champion, Boston sports fan, fisherman, jokester, pontoon and sailboat captain, and self-proclaimed Mayor of his winter community in Sebastian, Florida and lucky to have childhood friends that supported him through thick and thin. His positive attitude and ability to always
see the glass half full served him well throughout his life.
Douglas was a fun-spirited, kind soul who took on many passions. One of which was his love for sports, along with developing friendships with a major focus on community work. These things were evident in his participation in developing a basketball league in North Providence with his buddies. This opened an avenue for coaching, mentoring his players, and eventually a path to becoming a basketball referee in his spare time. It was here that he was able to continue his love for basketball while developing friendships that spanned decades. His work was recognized by his colleagues when he was inducted into the RI Board 84 Referee Hall of Fame a few years ago.
Douglas taught his family to have faith, be fair, display kindness, and be trustworthy, along with the value of hard work, the importance of supporting your family, and giving back whenever you could…all with a sprinkle of humor and charm.
In the end, Douglas will be remembered as a kind person inside and out with a devotion to his family like no other. His smile and big blue eyes could light up any room and they certainly did. His life’s work has made an important impact on our lives. He will be deeply missed but not forgotten because his legacy continues with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchild. Until we meet again.
