Edward R. Feller, MD

Edward R. Feller, MD, age 80, of Providence, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, at his residence. He was the devoted husband of the late Wendy (Levins) Feller, a beloved actress and member of the Rhode Island theater community. Their remarkable and vibrant relationship could light up a room.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, a son of the late Abraham and Emma “Ginny” (Tannenbaum) Feller, Dr. Feller had been a resident of Providence since 1978.

He earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1967 and Doctor of Medicine from New Jersey Medical School in 1973. He completed residency in Internal Medicine in 1975 at McGill University Royal Victoria Hospital, Montreal, and his fellowship in Gastroenterology in 1977 at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Dr. Feller was Clinical Professor of Medical Science at Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University for over forty years. He previously served as Co-Director of the Community Health clerkship and as Director of the Division of Gastroenterology at The Miriam Hospital. He was Co-Editor of the Rhode Island Medical Journal from 2018 to 2021.

Throughout his career, Dr. Feller was passionate in his commitment to medical students and their education. He mentored generations of medical students who were devoted to him. He received the Faculty Award for Teaching on fourteen occasions, and he was awarded the Senior Citation, Alpert Medical School of Brown University’s highest honor seven times. Dr. Feller also authored or co-authored well over a hundred journal articles, book chapters, and op-eds, the majority of which involved collaborations with medical students.

In his personal life, Dr. Feller was an avid ultramarathon runner, completing fifty-mile and one hundred-mile races in the wilderness. He was also a connoisseur of the arts, with a deep appreciation for theater, music, and literature. Finally, he loved his family and his friends.

Dr. Feller is survived by his two children, Dr. Alexander Arthur Feller of Manhattan and Dr. Sophie Claire Feller of Los Angeles; his brother, Dr. Joseph Feller; his nephews Dr. Ross Feller, Dr. Reid Feller, and Jonathan Shecter; and his niece Jane Saul (Shecter). He also leaves behind his treasured companion, his Goldendoodle Oliver.

Funeral services for Dr. Feller will be held on Monday, July 27, 2026, at 10:00am at Temple Beth El, 70 Orchard Ave., Providence, with burial in Swan Point Cemetery. Shiva will be held following the burial at the Feller residence in Providence on Monday from 1:00 to 6:00pm.
