

Edward J. Pennine (Ret. P.P.D.) 85, of West Warwick, passed away on Tuesday, April 14, 2015 at Rhode Island Hospital. He was the loving husband of Beverly A. (Lucas) Pennine for the past 49 years. Born in Providence, he was a son of the late Dr. Saverio N. and Ella (DeCourcy) Pennine. Ed attended Mount Pleasant High School in Providence, graduating with the class of 1948 and then went on to serve his country proudly with the United States Army during the Korean War. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the Bronze Service Star and graduated as Corpsman from the U.S. Army Ft. Sam Houston Medical School. Mr. Pennine also attended the University of Rhode Island, earning a certificate for the Executive Development Program and also graduated from Roger Williams University in 1975 and received his Bachelor of Science Degree. He began his career as a Patrolman with the Providence Police Department in 1952 and was appointed to the Detective Division for several years until 1963 when he was promoted to Sergeant and was assigned to the Bureau of Intelligence. During that time he was detailed to the “C Squad” and graduated from the Federal Bureau of Investigation Narcotics School in Washington, DC. He was reassigned as Director of the Bureau of Intelligence until his retirement in 1968. Throughout Ed’s career he received many commendations for his outstanding police work. After his fulfilling career with the Providence Police Department he was employed at the Women and Infants Hospital for 16 years beginning as Assistant to the Administrator and worked his way towards becoming director and then Associate Vice President of the Personnel & Labor Relations Department, retiring in 1984. He was a member of several hospital committees including the Personnel Committee at Women & Infants, Tuition Assistance Committee, Chairman of the Retirement and Chairman of Employee Relations committees, Task Force member for both R.I. Hospital and Roger Williams General Hospital Affiliation Studies. Ed was also a member of the American Management Association, American Hospital Association, American Society for Hospital Personnel Directors, Hospital Association of R.I., the Personnel Association of R.I., American College of Hospital Administrators, Urban League of R.I., longtime member of the American Legion Post #1 for over 55 years, Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #3, and the Retired Providence Police & Firefighters Association. He was a communicant of Saint Gregory the Great Church. Besides his wife, he leaves many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Dr. William Pennine, Virginia DelGizzo, Eleanor Scalera, Edna Mangiante, and Ernestine Granieri. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Dr. William Corrao and the staff of Rhode Island Hospital's Adult Critical Care Unit for their genuine care and kindness. His funeral will be held on Monday, April 20, 2015 at 8:30 am, from the Russell J. Boyle & Son Funeral Home, 142 Centerville Road (Rt. 117) Warwick. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am, in Saint Gregory the Great Church, 350 Cowesett Road, Warwick. Interment with military honors will be in the Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Exeter. Visiting hours will be on Sunday, April 19, 2015 from 5:00 to 8:00 pm.
