Narragansett Florence L. Allen, 81, of Vanderbilt Drive, died peacefully Saturday at home surrounded by her loving children. She was the beloved wife of the late Joseph D. Allen to whom she was married for fifty two years. Born in Providence, a daughter of the late Joseph and Helen (Comstock) Durkin, she lived in the Mount Pleasant section of Providence most of her life before moving to Narragansett twelve years ago. Mrs. Allen, a 1946 graduate of Hope High School, was employed by B.I.F. Industries prior to her marriage. After raising her children, she was employed as an Administrative Clerk for the Rhode Island Supreme Court for eighteen years, retiring in 1997. Active in the Providence community, and a lover of music, Florence was a member of the LaSalle Academy Parents Choir, and a former communicant of Blessed Sacrament Church. Once Florence and Joe moved to Narragansett, she quickly became active in that community as well, with her daily walks along the Narragansett Sea Wall, and spending summer days on Narragansett Town Beach where she was affectionately known to everyone as "Grammy". She was a voracious reader and also enjoyed the Boston Red Sox. Most of all, Flo enjoyed attending her grandchildren's activities over the years. She leaves a daughter, Nancy Allen Santucci, and her husband, Anthony P. Santucci of Wakefield; two sons, Daniel J. Allen, and his wife, Ruth L. Allen, Kevin J. Allen, and his companion, Carleen M. Doorley, all of Narragansett; three loving grandchildren, Allen, Julia and Olivia Santucci; several nieces and nephews, and many friends, including her "beach people". She was predeceased by a son, Dennis J. Allen, and sisters, Evelyn M. Lynch and Helen Brothers. The funeral will be held Friday, at 8:15, from the Russell J. Boyle & Son Funeral Home, 142 Centerville Road, (Rt117) Warwick. Concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am in Christ the King Church, 180 Old North Road, South Kingstown. Burial will be in Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery, Exeter. Visiting hours Thursday, 4 - 8 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations to Home & Hospice Care of Rhode Island, 1085 North Main Street, Providence, RI 02904 or the American Cancer Society, 931 Jefferson Boulevard, Suite 3004, Warwick, RI 02886 in her memory will be appreciated.
