George C. Cheng, born February 17, 1917, in Chungking, China, resided at Wingate on Blackstone Blvd in Providence RI before passing away surrounded by family and friends on Thursday, April 26, 2018. Formerly living at the Regency with Teresa Lo Cheng, his loving wife of 64 years, he had lived in Chatham, NJ for 40+ years.
He is pre-deceased by his wife, his parents Sou-Yoh and Huang-Tze and his son, Michael, and survived by his son Dr. David Cheng, his daughter Liz Cheng (husband Gerardo Codola), his daughter-in-law Terry Cheng and grandchildren Tiffany, Kimberly (husband Tyler Jeffries, their son Parker), Jason, Katherine, Lauren, Nicholas, Erica and many Lo family members.
After receiving a scholarship to Jiaotong University, considered the MIT of China, he worked for the Minister of Economic Affairs. George was among the few to pass a national test, earning a scholarship to Columbia University Graduate School of Engineering, after which he worked in the fields of mining, civil, chemical, electrical and nuclear engineering.
A memorial mass will be held on Saturday, June 16th, at 11:30 AM at St. Sebastian Church, 67 Cole Avenue in Providence; donations may be made to St. Sebastian Church in his memory. Following the mass, a reception will be held for family and friends.
